That's simple, but on a 2,650 mile trail there are a lot of little variations that can cause heated debates about whether someone is TRULY a thru hiker. In my experience this debate reaches a peak on trail in the first few hundred miles, and then gradually people get a bit less stringent in their thinking. By Washington most people aren't obsessing about it much anymore. Your friends at home don't care at all.</p><p>My purpose here is just to highlight some of the most common variations on a strict thru hike. Language flexes to fit reality, so I won't try to force my opinion as to what is <i>really</i> a thru hike. If you have an opinion, feel free to share it in the comments. In my experience, as with many topics, people with strong opinions on this are often vocal without representing a majority view.</p><p>As a starting point, some people who identify as "purists" define an unsupported PCT thru-hike as follows:</p><p><i>Starting at either the southern or northern monument, hike in a single direction, on all of the available PCT track, with connected steps, with no break of more than one day at a time, and without support to the other monument. </i></p><p><i>When there is a closure, hike to the closure sign and then backtrack to get off the trail. Then get back on trail and hike to the opposite closure sign and then reverse direction and continue your hike.</i></p><p>Sometimes instead of "no breaks" it will be "in a single season." Either way, obviously that's a thru hike. However, I'll describe some of the 14 variations that I have seen that in practice, on the trail, many people still consider a thru hike:</p><p><b>Uncontroversial:</b></p><p></p><ul style="text-align: left;"><li><b>Connected-steps resupply detours.</b> This would be, for example, departing from the PCT track on foot at Mt. Laguna to resupply and then returning to the PCT track on foot a little farther on, rather than backtracking to where you left the PCT and restarting from that point. Typically these detours add a little distance rather than being shortcuts.</li><li><b>Hiking Popular Alternates. </b> The Crater Lake alternate and the Tunnel Falls alternate, for example, are not official PCT routes, but many, many hikers take them, and they are more interesting than the PCT track. Detouring to summit Mt. San Jacinto, Mt, Baden Powell, or Mt. Whitney also typically involves detouring around a bit of PCT track, and no one blinks at these choices. Getting to and from campgrounds also can involve short missed sections of PCT track.</li><li><b>Taking personal days off:</b> Taking a few days off in town to recover from an injury is necessary for many hikers and really not controversial. I had to do this in both 2017 and 2018. People also sometimes take time off for weddings or other family events. I've seldom heard this questioned, even though it's technically a break in your hike.</li><li><b>Tiny Gaps in Connected Steps:</b> This usually means something like getting picked up for a resupply stop on one side of a road and getting dropped off on the other side. You miss something like 25 steps. I did this at Big Bear, for example. Very few people care about these micro breaks in your connected steps, but some people do. When you are actually out on trail, crossing a busy road on foot in both direction just to connect your steps across that short distance might seem like lunacy ... or not. It depends on the person.</li></ul><p></p><ul style="text-align: left;"></ul><p></p><div><b>Varying Opinions:</b></div><div><ul style="text-align: left;"><li><b>Closure Alternates and skipping open PCT track.</b> A fire closure might typically be a few miles past the closest trail or road crossing that would allow detouring around the fire closure. The PCTA will usually publish an official alternate route, which is then considered to temporarily be the official PCT track. Some people think you should still do an out-and-back to the actual closure, AND hike the alternate. Most people, like me, just hike the alternate. </li><li><b>Hiking Through Closures:</b> This means ignoring the closure signs and just hiking through a closed section. This is illegal and disrespectful toward the people who built and maintain the trail. It often adds additional work for people repairing that trail section. Don't get me wound up. I never do this, but it doesn't seem to bother some people.</li><li><b>Getting off Trail to Avoid Bad Weather:</b> Some ultralight hikers really aren't carrying adequate gear for cold, wet weather. In some cases hikers will get off trail and check into a hotel to wait out the weather. I avoid this, but I was already checked into a hotel at Snoqualmie pass for a resupply stop and did stay an extra day to avoid a full-day of hiking in the rain. This borders on supported hiking.</li><li><b>Slack Packing:</b> This means hiking with an almost empty (aka slack) pack or just a day pack while someone else drops you off in the morning and meets you in the afternoon. It's a form of supported hiking. It's not a big deal to me, but opinions vary.</li><li><b>Personal Trail Angels:</b> Enjoying a soda from a cooler left by a trail angel is uncontroversial, but if you have someone meet you at almost every road crossing that becomes a supported thru hike. The same would be true of having someone routinely meet you with a resupply. Still a great hike, but now a supported hike. </li><li><b>Temporary Skips and Flip Flops:</b> Fire closures can sometimes halt forward progress, and snow and dangerous stream crossings can make a straight-through hike more-than-usually risky some years. In 2017, which was a high snow year, two hikers drowned on stream crossings and many others had close calls. To reduce risks, some hikers will rearrange the order of their hike by skipping ahead and changing direction, or skipping a section and coming back to hike it later. I've done both.</li></ul><div><br /></div></div><div><b>Intentional Skips and Gaps:</b></div><div><br /></div><div>All of these are avoidable breaks in your connected steps. Whether they are meaningful to your own goals for the hike varies by individual.</div><div><ul style="text-align: left;"><li><b>Intentional Skips at Town Stops:</b> There are a few town stops, such as Idyllwild, Wrightwood, Big Bear, South Lake Tahoe, Sierra City, Seiad Valley, and Crater Lake where you can hike in or get a ride in at one point and hike out or get a ride out to a point further along the trail. This usually results in skipping at least a few miles of trail. Other than getting around the closure south of Idyllwild, I did not do any of these skips, but I met many people who did them. When I hiked the steep five miles from Mazama Campground to the Crater Lake Rim, I would estimate that at least 80% of PCT thru hikers took the Crater Lake shuttle bus instead.</li><li><b>Catch up to Tramily Skips:</b> Many hikers get into a trail family that is socially very close and improves their safety. When an injury or equipment failure causes one hiker to need a few days in town, they sometimes skip ahead to the next town stop to rejoin their trail family. Keep in mind that for women, persons of color, and LGBTQ hikers safety is often a bigger concern than for white cisgender men. To me these skips seem like smart hiking and a reasonable tradeoff against a connected-steps goal. </li><li><b>Closure skips that don't get made up:</b> Sometimes a closure is so awkwardly placed that the official alternate is a 40 mile road walk. Often hikers will just skip ahead when faced with this type of closure. Sometimes the closure opens, and sometimes it stays closed the whole season. In the end your hike might have a 40-mile gap in it. How big a gap you can have and still consider it a thru hike is kind-of up to you. On a 2,650 mile trail missing 40 miles would not stop most people from considering themselves to have finished the trail. I did not have to deal with this personally, although I did bounce around a lot to get all my miles done.</li><li><b>Rides at Road Walks:</b> There are some places where the PCT or an alternate is on a paved road. Hiking on pavement is hard on your feet and knees, as well as contradictory to the whole point of the hike, but even so, usually I walk these. Once at Castella I felt awkward when a Sherriff's Deputy offered me a ride so I got in and skipped a mile of pavement that way. Another ride I took that resulted in a break in steps was in Washington when a fire-closure put me on a trail that ended at a busy road with no good shoulder to walk on safely. I got a ride up to White Pass in a jeep, which was fun.</li></ul><div>So, because of trail closures, town stops, alternates, trail dangers, and other factors, what someone means by the term "thru hike" will often vary a little from the simple idea that first pops into our heads when we hear the term. Most people will say that they did a thru hike if they hiked at least 95% of the trail in one season, but at least got from one monument to the other. Some people will consider that a failure. Four days ago I had a partial knee replacement on my right knee. This is the knee that took me off-trail in 2017, 2019, and 2022. Basically I had a pretty bad tear in the meniscus, but only in the medial compartment. My initial recovery is going well, and ideally I should be able to day-hike as early as August, just three months after the surgery. </p><p>Resting and recovering has given me plenty of time to just sit and think, and with the prospect of a working knee I've started thinking about backpacking again. I've also watched some PCT thru-hiking videos and I've thought more about the experience of long-distance hiking.</p><p>As context, I hiked the PCT in 2017, but didn't quite finish, partly due to my knee and partly due to the heavy snows that year. Then in 2018 I did a full-hike of the PCT in one season, aka a thru-hike. I've chipping away a little at the miles that I missed in 2017 and have about 250 miles to go to finish a "section hike" of the PCT as well, which I hope to be able to conclude in 2024.</p><p>Completing the PCT is a significant accomplishment. It requires persistence, effort, endurance of discomfort, toleration of risk, and skills, especially during stream crossings and crossing steep snow fields. Overcoming injuries and pain is almost inevitable during a long hike. Many hikers will fall at least once during a thru-hike, and many will have to overcome blisters, sunburn and other over-use injuries. Snow-covered trails, fire closures, difficult weather, and finding water require problem solving. Conditions sometimes require hiking at night or in very uncomfortable weather. All together, when a hiker finishes the trail they have achieved something. </p><p>At the same time, it's possible to develop a grandiose assessment of this attainment. You can quickly confirm this tendency by watching a few "my PCT hike" videos on YouTube, where hikers conquer "heinous" mountain passes on their "epic" journey. It is after-all just a lot of hiking on a rather well-maintained trail not too far from civilization.</p><p>Looking back from the age of 66, five months thru-hiking the PCT does not stand out for me as a singularly defining milestone in my life. Married life, having a career, raising children, and renovating our property all took more time and effort. Getting up everyday and hiking was easier in many ways than getting up every day and working a corporate job. So, this is a very roundabout way of saying that the "achievement" aspect of hiking isn't too important or meaningful to me.</p><p>Despite vague expectations that hiking the PCT might be a deeply spiritual and life-altering experience, most hikers find that the changes to their perspective are subtle. Attitudes toward cleanliness, creature comforts, and food shift, but after a period of readjustment most people get reintegrated into ordinary life within about a month, and this was true for me as well.</p><p>So, what is it about hiking the PCT that is so compelling, so enticing, so invigorating, and so addictive that people will quit their jobs and take six months out of their life to hike the trail? Here's my own working list of what typically makes the experience worthwhile:</p><p></p><ul style="text-align: left;"><li><b>The Beauty and Diversity of Nature:</b> To some degree just the number of hours of walking combined with the many different ecosystems that you will walk through give you opportunities to see nature in more of it's variety and beauty than if you just went to an arboretum or visited the many different viewpoints along the road. To be sure, there is a lot of repetition, but the constantly changing landscape keeps it interesting. I have a friend who <i>only</i> wants to see the most spectacular vistas. If that's you, then you will be disappointed by the PCT.</li><li><b>Immersion in Nature:</b> During a long hike you are immersed in nature far more than on a day or weekend hike. You aren't even sleeping in campgrounds, just finding a flat spot to throw down your tent at the end of the day. You are drinking water from streams. When the sun goes down the air gets cold, and in the afternoon it can be baking hot. When it rains you are wet, and in a storm sometimes you can't see 100 feet. Where there is a ridge you hike up and over it, and where there is a valley you hike into it. That intimacy with the landscape and the realities of nature is uniquely soul satisfying and it really kicks in after weeks rather than days.</li><li><b>Constant Awareness and Attention:</b> Without overstating the risks, when on a long hike you can never forget about water, weather, where you can camp next, your own body, and your very-next step on the trail. It's not a high level of attention, but it's constant, and this gives it an almost meditative quality. Your mind can wander, but part of you needs to stay with the hike all the time. If you snap off a hiking pole by not paying attention, you can't just pop down to the store and get a new one. If you step on a loose rock and sprain your ankle, you could suffer a lot limping off the mountain.</li><li><b>Operating Near your Limits:</b> The experience of hiking nearly to exhaustion day-after-day is strangely invigorating. Rather than feeling oppressed, you feel completely vital and alive. You come close to your limits, ideally without crossing over into over-use injuries. Some people try to find their limits by doing the "24 Hour Challenge:" trying to cover as many miles as possible in 24 hours.</li><li><b>Kinesthetic experience:</b> I ran into a woman on trail near Big Bear who was about to quit her hike for the reason that "hiking is boring." If you don't enjoy the movement of your body as you swing down the trail, there can be many miles that will simply seem monotonous. Hiking through a forest, there isn't a lot of variety visually, but (when I'm not in pain) every step has a kinesthetic pleasure within it. This feeling often builds as your body gets stronger.</li><li><b>Social Experience:</b> At a minimum, most of us enjoy the simple comradery of a shared experience. When on trail you feel like you belong to an exclusive club. Even if you aren't tightly connected to a hiking partner or a "trail family" you will inevitably run into other hikers, make friends, hike together, share life stories and meals together. It's pleasant and affirming. Trail angels also create a positive social experience along with snacks and rides into town. Many people make long-term friends hiking the trail together.</li><li><b>A Different World:</b> In the simplest terms, in long-distance hiking I've gotten used to hitch hiking, night-hiking, USPS general delivery, Amtrak, Greyhound, coin-operated showers, bumming TP from strangers, and the wonderful properties of Ibuprofen. I've met nurses, pilots, financial wizards, wildlife biologists, baristas, and smoke jumpers. I've eaten tortillas with peanut butter, ramen with fresh eggs, and way too many kinds of freeze dried dinners. My purpose is just to explain the math behind insulating a van so that the inside air temperature is comfortably warm on cold day. Most of the math also applies to staying cool. We want to understand:</p><p></p><ol style="text-align: left;"><li>Keys to construct a well-insulated space, and what is achievable</li><li>How much heat is required to heat an insulated van</li><li>How to provide that heat</li></ol><h2 style="text-align: left;">Keys to construct a well-insulated space, and what is achievable</h2><div>In conceptual terms the answer is quite simple. Have as many well-insulated surfaces as possible, and as few poorly insulated surfaces as possible. So what do we mean by a well-insulated surface? Let's pretend that a van is a rectangular box with a heated space with dimensions of 6' x 6' x 12'. This would be an enclosed space of 432 cubic feet, with a surface area of 360 square feet. The 360 square feet is the critical number because heat crosses a boundary measured in square feet. So the idea is to have as much as possible of that 360 square feet well insulated.</div><div><br /></div><div>The most important formula for us to keep in mind is the relationship between insulation value and energy needed to keep the inside warmer than the outside. Here is the engineering formula in concept:</div><div><br /></div><div>[Heating load] = [surface area] x [temp. difference] / [insulation value]</div><div><br /></div><div>You can easily see that increasing the insulation value will reduce heating load. Double the insulation value and you cut the heating load in half. In Imperial units, heating load is measured in BTU/hr, and insulation value in R-value. If we add the all measurement units this looks a little more complex, but it's still the same formula.</div><div><br /></div><div>[BTU/hr] = [Surface Area (sq. ft)] x [Temp Diff. (deg F)] / [R-value (ft2·°F·hr/BTU)]</div><div><br /></div><div>So, if we want to reduce the heating load, we want to cover as much of the square footage as possible with good insulators. In quantitative terms, this means materials with a high R-value. R-value has a convenient characteristic. When we make a composite material out of two materials we can just add their R-values together to get a composite R-value. So a material with an R-value of 1 combined with a material with an R-value of 2 has an R-value of 3.</div><div><br /></div><div>Here are the R-values per inch of some materials typically found in a van build:</div><div><br /></div><div><google-sheets-html-origin><table border="1" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" dir="ltr" style="border-collapse: collapse; Thinsulate is typically installed at a thickness of about 1.5", so you can get possibly get about R-5 from it. Don't always believe the optimistic ratings from manufacturers though--that's what they achieved in the lab, not in a real build where some of the insulation is compressed. Compressed insulation will deliver less insulation value, but a van is so oddly shaped that you will end up cramming insulation into oddly shaped cavities as often as you are installing it in beautiful flat sheets. Plywood paneling is typically installed at 1/4 inch, or a bit less, so it only typically contributes about R-0.3.</div><div><br /></div><div>A well-insulated wall or ceiling could be as high as R-10 in places, but will typically be all the way down to just better than R-1 where plywood has been attached directly a steel framing member. Windows are difficult to insulate, as are the doors. Putting up close fitting thermal curtains and using thermal window coverings can cut heat loss at least in half for windows and doors, so that's a common approach to staying warmer at night.</div><div><br /></div><div>So, in addition to using good insulation wherever possible, three practices can also make a big difference: use a thermal break of at least R-1 when attaching anything to the van's metal framework; don't leave any steel elements fully exposed to the heated space; and, put coverings over any poorly-insulated areas at night.</div><div><br /></div><div>I'm not going to get into the physics of this, but there is a bonus R-value caused by trapping air. If you can trap 1/2" to 4" of air in part of the build, you get about R-1 from the trapped air if it's static, so some of the van structure that is hard to insulate at least has some inherent insulation value. Also there is a boundary effect of still air against the interior of the van. It gives the effect of about R = 0.7 on the inside of the van if you aren't running a circulating fan. The outside also gets some value from this boundary layer if the air is still, but you can't really count on that.</div><div><br /></div><div>Based on the materials involved and real-world experience, even with your best efforts, it's very unusual to achieve an overall performance of better than R-5 for the heated space, and R-3 is probably much more typical. Although we are a bit light on empirical measurements, it's probably fair to describe van insulation performance in five categories:</div><div>R-1: just factory headline insulation and air pockets in a cargo van - aka uninsulated</div><div>R-2: lightly insulated</div><div>R-3: well insulated, but exposed windows and doors</div><div>R-5: very-well insulated with treatments for all surfaces</div><div>R-7: super-insulated van</div><div><br /></div><div>So, with these insulation values in mind ...</div><h2 style="text-align: left;">How much heat is required to heat an insulated van?</h2><div>Given our assumption of 360 square feet for the surface area of the heated space, we can calculate the heating loads for various outside to inside temperatures. F., with a van insulated to R3, you will need about 3,600 BTU/hr of heat. And at an outside temperature of 15 deg. F. you would need 6,000 BTU per hour. </google-sheets-html-origin></div><h2 style="text-align: left;">How to provide that heat</h2><div>There are a lot of ways to bring heat into a van, so I'll just mention three popular options with their capacities. If you are somewhere you can plug-in to an electrical outlet you can use a typical 1,500 watt electric heater to provide heat. The conversion to BTU's is Watts x 3.41 = BTU's, so 1,500 watts will heat at 5,115 BTU/hr, which would keep you warm down to below 25 deg. F. in an R-3 insulated van. That might be the right answer when parked at home or if you happen to be staying at a campground with hookups. Espar and Webasto fuel heaters are popular; they both have 7,000 BTU/hr models and some larger models also. Propex offers a propane heater that puts out 6,350 BTU/hr and they also have a larger model. This is far from an exhaustive list.</div><div><br /></div><div>This post hasn't covered the whole topic, but it's a start at understanding the capacity of the heating system required, and some of the issues related to insulating a van. It's also important to not get too starry-eyed by the R-value insulation rating of some insulating material, and keep in mind that a van is very hard to insulate to a high R-value due to the windows, doors, cab area, and the uneven shapes.</div><h2 style="text-align: left;">Conclusion</h2><div>Take insulating your van seriously and you can get to R-3 without extraordinary effort. Beyond that level you will be working harder at it than most DIY builders. You can check the table above to see what size heater you will need at a minimum. Olallie Lake was the northern limit of the fire closure order when we hiked this section.</p><p>After hiking through a burn area we were in healthy forest for most of the hike. There were a few picturesque spots leading up to Mount Hood, which really is the star of this section. </p><p>Our mileages we're about 12, 17, 15, and 6. The last day we made it to Timberline Lodge at 9:30 am and enjoyed their famous breakfast buffet. Lori ate an equivalent of approximately three meals by piling her plate high.</p><p>After eating we got Lori's resupply box and then said our goodbyes. My arthritic knee had become stiff, painful, and maybe a little unstable, so I went back to Portland while Lori hiked on </p><p>The trip back to Portland consisted of two buses, one light rail trip and a walk of less than a mile to our friends house. When I climbed up out of Santiam Pass in 2018 significant sections were freshly burned, each step brought up a cloud of ash, and the undergrowth was completely gone in the freshly burned areas. Just four years later the dead trees still dominate many areas, but the ash is gone and the blackened earth has been turned green again. Flowers were blooming everywhere, and the landscape looked fully alive again.</p><p>Christine dropped us off at Santiam Pass. Friends Lori, Georgia and I climbed up out of the pass and were quickly above 6,000 feet. We enjoyed spectacular views, but with visibility slightly altered by light smoke. Three Finger Jack was dramatic and more interesting to me than the higher and more dignified Mount Jefferson. The flora was beautiful, lush, and abundant.</p><p>The hiking was moderately challenging. The only tricky bits were a short snow traverse and one log stream crossing. There were a lot of blow downs, many with root balls intact. Georgia and Lori swam at both Rockpile Lake and Pamelia Lake while I practiced looking lazy. </p><p>We came off the PCT at Pamelia Lake due to an active trail closure order covering a 20 mile section of trail leading up to Olallie Lake.</p><p>My knee was pretty painful on day three, so I am hoping that two days off will help. It wasn't until a few month ago that I started to seriously plan to get back on trail. </p><p>As soon as I started training, a flareup of osteoarthritis in the spring of 2022 put me out of commission for about six weeks until I was able to get a shot of cortisone in my right knee in the first half of June. After some careful training I'm now looking forward to attempting Santiam Pass to Cascade Locks in Oregon, Donner Pass to Sierra City in California, and Tuolumne Meadows to Carter Pass in California. If all goes well this will complete a section hike of the PCT that I technically started in 2016, mostly liked in 2017, and then did the Sierra section of in 2019. So, if I get these sections hiked this year it will complete my second hike of the PCT. No guarantees of course that my knees will hold up, or that we won't have fire closures in those sections.</p><p>How is having a goal like completing a PCT hike meaningful or useful? Even an arbitrary goal engages our natural goal-seeking impulse. You could say that an arbitrary goal is a kind of mental hack to engage one's motivational energy, which then leads to activity. </p><p>I would also be happy doing almost any other hike. I'll use this blog to outline the project, some of my choices, and some of the reasoning behind those choices where I have not seen explanations and data commonly posted by others.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: verdana;">If there was a van "off the shelf" that we could just buy that meets our design points, I think we would probably just do that. So while I have much to learn in the process, this will also be a design based on a fair amount of experience.</span></p><h2 style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: verdana;">Programming</span></h2><p style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: verdana;">Programming is another way of asking the question: what will you use the van for, and what will be important for you to be happy. At a high level here are some use cases that I want to accommodate.</span></p><p></p><ul style="text-align: left;"><li><span style="font-family: verdana;">Guest bedroom or office (parked at our house).</span></li><li><span style="font-family: verdana;">Mobile office for day use away from home, returning in the evening.</span></li><li><span style="font-family: verdana;">Bug-out van, with provision for a week or more for 5 people (think wildfires).</span></li><li><span style="font-family: verdana;">Picnic day at the beach with family.</span></li><li><span style="font-family: verdana;">5-7 day boondocking or campground without services.</span></li><li><span style="font-family: verdana;">2-5 week trip for sightseeing.</span></li><li><span style="font-family: verdana;">Driving across the country with two people.</span></li><li><span style="font-family: verdana;">Living in the van "full-time" for 2 people.</span></li></ul><div><span style="font-family: verdana;">An ideal design would meet the maximum demand of each scenario. In a high snow year, the biggest <u>schedule</u> danger for many NOBO thru-hikers is waiting for the snow in the Sierras to melt. As of May 16, 2019 the "Sierra Entry Indicator" suggests June 15th as the first safe entry day for the Sierras. This timing will just barely work for hikers that were comfortable banging out 22.5 miles on an average day by the time they reached KM. For slower hikers, June 15th is already too late. One option is to go into the Sierras early enough to get through before the melt takes hold. This is tough for all but the more aggressive hikers, so if you hiked 18 to 22 miles on a typical day as you finished up the desert section, making it through the Sierras starting on May 20th or so is a risky plan. You have a high likelihood of getting into conditions that you aren't comfortable with, especially high stream crossings.<br />

Another good option for hikers that feel comfortable doing 18 to 22 miles a day is to flip up to Dunsmuir around mile 1500 and start hiking south. This looked doable starting around May 20th and will be easier as the weather warms and snow melts off. June 1st would be a very reasonable start for this section, much earlier than going up into the Sierras. The 300 miles from Dunsmuir to Sierra City include some short snowy sections, but these are relatively easy to traverse -- more like Mt. Baden Powell than like Fuller Ridge. You will still want your microspikes, but won't use them often. Once you reach Sierra City, you will already be well into June and the Sierras will start to look friendlier. Most of the really tough stream crossings are south of Sonora Pass, which is around mile 1000, so you will be hitting them later still. If you do this flip, you have to travel from Kennedy Meadows to Dunsmuir twice. First, get a ride out of Kennedy Meadows and hitch or get a bus to Mojave or Bakersfield. From there you can use Greyhound and Amtrak to get up to Dunsmuir. For each trip, there is a total elapsed time of about 2 days, and cost about $100, although it can be done in just over a day if you get a perfect hitch out of KM.<br />

I did this exact flip in 2018, and did a skip from Kennedy Meadows to Quincy and then hiked north in 2017 due to the snow conditions. Fire closures on the PCT combined with heavy snow accumulation earned 2017 the nickname "The Year of Fire and Ice," and in 2018 with lighter snow, we had at least as much trouble with fire closures, including closures in the symbolic section between Hart's Pass and the Northern Monument. Many times hikers had to detour off of the official PCT route, usually following signs, but occasionally getting off course. Guthooks, the most popular map application on the trail in 2017 and 2018, often did not cover the detour routes.<br />
<br />
What can you do? In addition to talking with other hikers, check the <a href="https://www.pcta.org/discover-the-trail/closures/" target="_blank">PCT trail closures</a> every time you get into town to see if something has been announced, and if warnings have been posted, usually when a closure seems imminent. Next, study the closure and alternates, possibly downloading the closure details to your phone.<br />
<br />
Do I need to say this? <i>Never Hike a Closure. </i>It's hard for me imagine a more disrespectful violation of trail etiquette. The PCTA, volunteers, and land managers are working hard to keep the trail safe and open, and you are abusing the trail and these people when you hike a closure. Regardless of your own judgement, hiking a trail that has been damaged almost always causes additional erosion and increases the effort to bring the trail back up to standard.<br />
<br />
Next, consider locating a paper map, or download digital maps that cover the closure route. Digital maps show you the trails mentioned in the alternate route, elevation changes, major water sources and campgrounds, and can be especially valuable in the first few days of a closure announcement when signage may not be up yet. Viewed through a smartphone application, these maps will also pinpoint your location using the phone's GPS. <a href="https://www.avenzamaps.com/" target="_blank">Avenza</a> is an easy-to-use map display app favored by the Forest Service that you can download free. Some maps are free on Avenza, but a fee of up to about $15 is more typical.<br />
<br />
Two digital map resources cover almost the entire trail in detail: the <a href="https://www.natgeomaps.com/trail-maps/trails-illustrated-maps" target="_blank">National Geographic Trails Illustrated Maps</a>, which cover most of the PCT, and the <a href="https://www.fs.usda.gov/Internet/FSE_DOCUMENTS/stelprd3791326.html#wildmaps" target="_blank">Forest Service Visitor Maps for California</a>, which fill in most of the gaps in the Trails Illustrated maps.<br />
<br />
In 2018 in the Goat Rocks Wilderness, I was happy to have a digital map of a nine mile detour. The map showed me exactly where I was on the detour, and helped me pick a great campsite. The next morning, two Forest Service rangers told me about another PCT hiker taking a wrong turn and ending up in their fire line just the day before.<br />
<br />
Also in 2018 I had downloaded the Trails Illustrated Map covering the Northern Cascades National Park and was able to see the entire Ross Lake detour. Camped in a smoky haze north of Stehekin, I opted to come back later, hoping that the trail from Rainy Pass to Manning Park would reopen, which it did, with a remaining detour. Some of my fellow hikers on tighter schedules, painstakingly transcribed information off of my map, even taking photos of my phone screen. That group did make it to the Canadian border via Ross Lake, but at least one of them was going to quit the trail before they were able to study the detailed map. Later, when I hiked passed Hart's Pass, I was happy to have a detailed map of the remaining detour, which again helped in picking a campsite, and helped sort out one trail junction where the PCT signage was missing.<br />

In 2017 many people told me on trail that they wouldn't finish because they spent too much time trying to get through the Sierras, or waiting out the snow between Kennedy Meadows and Bishop. After hiking 2,000 miles in 2017 and thru-hiking the PCT in 2018, I've talked to a lot of people that missed a thru-hike by 150 to 500 miles, or 660 miles for me in 2017. For many people, their miss was predictable and avoidable.<br />
<br />
2019 looks like another high snow year, so if a thru-hike is important to you, the schedule math below should be important to you as well. Everything is keyed to your average hiking pace. For a NOBO hiker that's often what you find comfortable when you hike the Walker Pass to Kennedy Meadows section, or just a little above that pace. I've added a zero/resupply day every 8th day and set September 27th as your finish date in Manning Park, because weather usually gets dicey around then. <br />

There are speed adjustments for each section since the Sierras are a lot slower than Oregon. Here's a simple way to read this chart:<br />

<li><b>Hiking pace of 20 miles per day or below:</b> In a high snow year, you have to increase your pace, or plan on a flip to finish. It's unlikely that you will be able to go up into the Sierras safely and make good miles by early June. In 2018, which was a low to moderate snow year, many people did successfully go up into the Sierras by early June. Read this post for options: <a href="http://www.mindfultrek.com/2018/09/calendar-math-for-nobo-thru-hikers.html" target="_blank">Calendar Math</a> </li>
<li><b>Hiking pace of 22.5 miles per day:</b> if you can get up into the Sierras by mid-June, a straight-thru hike should be in the cards. But ... if you find the snow too slow or get tempted to "wait it out" you risk running out of time for a finish at the Northern Terminus. Key point: get back on trail rather than cool your heels for an extra week or two, even if it means a skip or flip.</li>
<li><b>Hiking pace of 25 miles per day or longer:</b> you probably don't need this post to make the miles. It might just be interesting context for you as you chat with slower hikers.</li>

Putting all this math aside, just stay on trail and don't underestimate how long 2,661 miles takes to hike. These cookies pack a sweet and spicy punch. If bakery and commercial ginger snaps seem bland to you, then give this recipe a try. This is a "double" recipe that makes about four dozen cookies. Don't worry about overdoing it. These cookies freeze well sealed in ziplock bags, and they also keep well backpacking due to a very low moisture content.<br />
<br />
<b>Ingredients:</b><br />
<br />
1 1/2 cups unsalted butter<br />
2 cups dark coconut sugar or brown sugar<br />
3 medium to large eggs<br />
1/2 cup of blackstrap molasses<br />
5 teaspoons pure vanilla extract<br /><br />
4 tablespoons ground ginger<div>4 teaspoon dried lemon (or lemon zest)</div><div>2 teaspoons baking powder</div><div>1 teaspoon ground cinnamon</div><div>
1/2 teaspoon ground allspice (or ground cloves)<br />
1/4 teaspoon salt<br />
1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional)<br />
<br />2 cups unbleached white bread flour<br />2 cups unbleached white whole wheat flour<br />
<br />
20 ounces of candied ginger chips<br />
1 cup (approx.) white sugar for rolling the dough<br />
<br />
<b>Directions:</b><br />
<ol>
<li>Melt the butter using a double boiler until just melted, but not hot</li>
<li>Combine the butter and sugar, using an electric mixer</li>
<li>Add the eggs, and mix in</li>
<li>Add the molasses and vanilla and mix in</li>
<li>Add the spices and mix in</li>
<li>Add flour and mix in one cup at a time</li>
<li>Add the candied ginger and mix in</li>
</ol>
Let the dough cool in the refrigerator for 30+ minutes, as it will be easier to work with, and this will also help to bring out the spice flavors. While the dough cools, preheat the oven to 350 degrees and put silicone mats on your baking pans, or use a light coating of cooking oil.<br />
<ol>
<li>Make dough balls of about 2 tablespoons and roll them in the white sugar before putting on the baking pan. Alternately roll them in cinnamon sugar.</li>
<li>Bake until just beginning to brown, about 20 minutes (ovens vary significantly)</li>
<li>Immediately transfer to a wire rack to finish cooling for a ginger snap, or cool five minutes on the pan and then transfer to a wire rack for a slightly chewier cookie.</li>
</ol>
<div>
Blackstrap molasses has a more bitter flavor than regular molasses. If you have regular molasses on hand, you could adapt by slightly reducing the sugar. King Arthur Flour works well for this recipe.<br />
<br />
These cookies normally come out with a cracked top, but if you put two pans in at once, the lower pan may come out with a smooth top. To correct this, put the lower pan in first, and follow with the top pan after 5 minutes.</div>

<u><br /></u>You can count on questions about bears and mountain lions, and even whether you are planning to carry a gun as soon as people hear that you are planning to hike the PCT. Hardly anyone will ask what you plan to do about blisters.<br />
<br />
This post is a quick overview of common risks that you will actually face, and some of the less common risks. You shouldn't hesitate to get on trail because of these risks ... just be aware of them and take precautions when you can. When I use the term "serious risk," I mean things that take people off trail. I've added some brief comments about my own experience.<br />
<br />
<b>The most common serious risks:</b><br />
<b><br /></b>
<u>Overuse Injuries</u> - Shin splints, joint inflammation, painful neuromas, and other over-use injuries plague long-distance hikers. These common injuries tend to kick in after the first few hundred miles of hiking and can take you off trail for weeks at a time. Conditioning before the hike helps and taking zero days early in the hike can also help. I had to take 15 days off trail in 2017 to recover from an overuse injury to my left knee, and it seriously impacted my hiking schedule.<br />
<u><br /></u>
<u>Hiking Falls</u> - Many, and maybe most, hikers trip or slip and fall resulting in a scrape or two, and a few percent of hikers have serious falls resulting in injuries that take them off trail. Falls happen on all kinds of terrain, but especially on steep snow, and in icy conditions. I met one woman in 2018 who had broken her leg in the first two miles of trail the prior year, and met many hikers sporting obvious fall injuries. I tripped and fell on trail myself, but was lucky not to be injured.<br />
<br />
<u>Water Crossing Problems</u> - Due to the high snow levels in 2017, two PCT hikers drowned in the Sierras. This is unusual and was probably preventable; however, many people get wet, and some people have close calls every year. Lost footing during a water crossing can result in anything from a serious injury to simply a water-soaked backpack and unusable phone. I fell off a log at a smaller crossing in 2018 in the early evening and had a cold night with wet gear.<br />
<br />
<u>Exceptional Weather</u> - You may be fine 99% of the time, but you are likely to catch at least one exceptional weather event, especially if you start early or finish late. High winds and hail can both shred lightweight tents. A heavy snow can obscure the trail, and white-out condition can be deadly since you won't be able to safely navigate. Multiple rain days in a row can make it impossible to get dry and warm until you make the next town. These events can cause falls, navigational problems and hypothermia, and these all can have serious consequences.<br />
<u><br /></u>
<u>Hyper and hypothermia</u> - These are almost always the result of unusual weather, poor judgement, risk taking, and/or inadequate gear -- been there, done that. Once the process starts, you start to lose the mental and physical capabilities that you need to get yourself back on track, so these are serious backcountry problems. The early stages are common and the late stages thankfully rare. One simple rule: at the first hint that you are getting overheated or chilled, take action or make a plan to resolve the problem quickly.<br />
<br />
<u>Homesickness, Boredom, and Lack of Motivation</u> - You won't likely stay on trail if you are lonely and homesick, feel like your relationships at home are deteriorating, are bored with the trail, or feel like your hike has no purpose. I used a Garmin InReach to stay in touch with my wife and listened to audiobooks or music on my phone for a few hours most days.<br />
<br />
<u>Anti-social Behavior</u> - While most PCT hikers have a positive experience, anti-social behavior can really "kill the vibe" for others. Some women and LGBTQ hikers have commented on encountering an uncomfortable "bro-culture" on trail. Also, some women have had other uncomfortable experiences, and make a point to not camp alone. The dialogue on the PCT pages on Facebook can become critical, disrespectful, and dispiriting. You may see some hikers not practicing LNT. One older hiker commented to me that he felt "invisible" to younger hikers, although my own experience was almost the opposite.<br />
<br />
<b>Common, usually less-serious risks:</b><br />
<br />
<u>Blisters</u> - Although very common, blisters are often preventable by taping your feet immediately when you start to feel a hot spot. But, since most of us wait too long, blisters are a common source of misery on trail. To minimize problems, break in your shoes for 100+ miles before getting on trail and carry blister-preventative tape. Switching to a new pair of shoes the week before your start date is likely to result in blisters!<br />
<br />
<u>Sunburn and UV damage</u> - Some people get badly burned every year, and a lot of people get an unhealthy overdose of UV during the trail. Most of the burn problems happen in the first few weeks. I am very susceptible to burning, so I hike in long pants, long sleeves, a hat, and sungloves.<br />
<br />
<u>Poison Oak and Poodle Dog Bush</u> - You are going to encounter poison oak encroaching on the trail in California and Oregon, and poodle dog bush near the trail in Southern California. Most people sidestep these plants and don't get exposed.<br />
<br />
<u>Rodents</u> - When you camp at heavily-used campsites, mice and squirrels can be more aggressive than usual. Hikers that don't take extra care can end up with chew holes in their tent or backpack. Rodents, and even deer, will sometimes chew trekking pole and/or backpack straps.<br />
<br />
<b>Uncommon, but serious and real:</b><br />
<u><br /></u>
<u>Dehydration and Electrolyte Imbalance</u> - Most of us are fanatical about carrying enough water for a simple reason: dehydration is very uncomfortable, and then it leads to difficulty hiking, and can spiral down from there. When you are sweating a lot, electrolytes can quickly get out of balance, so you should take electrolytes daily. I met a woman who had to go to a hospital to recover just because she was not taking electrolytes in the desert section.<br />
<u><br /></u>
<u>Snow Blindness</u> - At high altitudes on snow it only takes a short time to "sunburn" your eyes. This can result in temporary blindness, which is obviously a dangerous situation. A good pair of sunglasses will eliminate this problem. I only mention snow blindness here because another PCT hiker told me about his hiking buddy becoming snow blind and having to walk him down and set up a tent for him so he could rest his eyes. Opticus can make great sunglasses for trail use to your prescription.<br />
<br />
<u>Getting Lost</u> - The PCT is such a major trail that it's unusual to "lose" the trail, although it can happen occasionally. Also there are only a few situations when you will be intentionally off the PCT, such as when digging a cathole, hiking over snow, or when on a fire-closure alternate. Still, getting lost can lead to tragedy, so it's important to stay aware of where you are. My phone, with GPS, always worked. In addition to Guthooks, whenever there was a significant alternate, I loaded the National Geographic Trails Illustrated map covering the area into the Avenza app. I also carry a Garmin InReach, a physical compass, and a whistle.<br />
<br />
<u>Giardia</u> - A few people get giardia or other waterborne illnesses every year because they didn't treat their water. Probably 80+ percent of hikers are very careful about this. My personal options: filter it, use chlorine dioxide tablets, boil it, or trust it (primarily at water caches or campgrounds).<br />
<br />
<u>Insect bites</u> - There are ticks on the PCT and especially if you wear shorts, there is a good chance of getting a tick on you at some point, and tick bites can lead to serious illness. While spiders are mostly harmless, some are poisonous, and can make you ill. You are almost guaranteed to get mosquito bites, but I have not heard of mosquito-borne illnesses on the PCT yet.<br />
<br />
<u>Bee stings</u> - Every year some people get stung by bees or wasps. If you have an allergy that makes a bee sting potentially serious, you should probably carry some form of protective gear, such as an insect bonnet and/or medicine to counteract the sting.<br />
<br />
<u>Lightning Strikes</u> - Especially in the high sierras, you can encounter late-afternoon thunderstorms. If you are coming up over a pass during a storm, it can be pretty scary. A few PCT hikers were struck and survived in recent years.<br />
<br />
<u>Cars</u> - PCT hikers have been struck by cars while roadwalking, so while we don't spend that many hours walking on backcountry roads, these winding roads with narrow shoulders seem to be especially dangerous.<br />
<br />
<u>Hitch-hiking</u> - This is an area where most people have great experiences, but there is always a risk that it won't go well. Women usually make a point to hitch with at least one other person to reduce their risk level.<br />
<br />
<u>Theft</u> - Since hikers are carrying over $2,000 in gear, and some cash, you might expect more robberies and thefts. This turns out to be fairly rare, but it does happen. Cameras and electronics are more at risk than your water filter.<br />
<u><br /></u>
<b>Very uncommon, but not impossible:</b><br />
<br />
<u>Bears and Mountain Lions</u> - Kind of like a shark attack, very high fear factor, but very low incidence. I'm not aware of any actual attacks on PCT hikers ever. Bears will sometimes false charge hikers and mountain lions will sometimes follow hikers though, both of which can be very scary.<br />
<u><br /></u>
<u>Snakes</u> - I saw over a dozen rattlesnakes in both 2017 and 2018, but there wasn't really any danger from them as long as you didn't get too close. People aren't part of the "prey template" for a rattlesnake ... we are just too big to eat.<br />
<br />
<u>Avalanche, Rock falls, Pine Cones, Branches, and Tree falls</u> - I would like to say that this never happens ... but sometimes nature just seems to fall apart. It's very rare that PCT hikers get caught in the actual event. Once I had to dodge a heavy falling oak branch, but not on the PCT. Burn areas are the worst for tree falls.<br />

Hiking the PCT in 2018 I met quite a few hikers who had no schedule for their hike, or even a way to realistically assess their chance of finishing--they had never "done the math". For very-fast hikers this would not usually be a huge problem, but for slower hikers, the schedule for a PCT thru-hike can be tight, and some hikers have to abandon their hike every year due to weather. This post focuses on the calendar issues around a PCT hike so you can have a better chance of finishing the hike that you want.<br />
<br />
In the end, there are four primary actions you can take related to your schedule that will improve your chance of finishing a thru hike:<br />
<br />
<i>1) Increase your Average Hiking Pace:</i> Get lightweight gear and do some conditioning hikes before your start date. That will help you to hike longer miles without injuries, and average daily hiking distance turns out to matter a lot. To comfortably complete a thru-hike, you need to hike 22+ miles on a typical day--conditioning before your start date will get you there faster.<br />
<br />
<i>2) Get an Earlier Start Date:</i> Get a start date with some wiggle room in it, appropriate to your hiking speed and plans. If you get a May date, understand that this implies an average pace of 25 miles per day or more, which not everyone is really prepared to do.<br />
<br />
<i>3) Watch your Schedule and Zero's:</i> Watch your schedule and notice if you are hiking slower than expected or taking more zeros or resupply days. Balance zeros with your schedule priorities. If you have to take time off for an injury or personal reason, re-assess your schedule. It can be hard to fix issues after you are already in Washington and the snow is falling.<br />
<br />
<i>4) Restructure your Hike if Needed:</i> If you get behind schedule for any reason, and don't think you can catch up, consider doing a temporary skip forward or a flip or converting a thru-hike into a section hike. I saw a few hikers get off trail in a funk instead of redefining or restructuring their hike. Remember it's YOUR hike, you can do it however it works for you. You are the primary person who decides whether your hike was a "success." note: in 2019 flipping became more restricted than in prior years.<br />
<br />
Calendar issues for the PCT pivot on the major trail sections and something I'm going to call "average pace." You can think of your average pace as your typical number of miles hiked per day, and we will discuss the calendar implications of different average pace levels. For the statistically minded, this isn't exactly your average, it's more of a representative pace. Of course your actual miles hiked will be affected by the trail conditions in each section. For example, I've assumed that you will hike at 80% of your average in the Sierras and 120% of your average in Oregon. These are in the ballpark for most hikers, although everyone has their own experience. To make this more specific, the schedule table below includes slower thru-hikers hikers with an average pace of 17.5 or 20.0 miles per day, moderate hikers at 22.5 miles per day, and fast hikers at 25.0 or 27.5 miles per day. You should have a good handle on which group you are closest to by the end of the desert section when you will typically have reached or be near your average pace.<br />
<br />
<b>The Desert (Campo to Kennedy Meadows): </b> 702 miles, 3,754 ft. of climbing per 20 miles. NOBO's can start this section as early as mid-March, although early to mid April is fine for most people. This is the "warm up" section of the hike. You can actually take as long as you want to hike it as long as you finish by early June. Most people can finish it in mid-May and take a week or two off without wrecking their schedule. The reason you can take your time in this section is that you have very limited options for hiking other sections until the second half of May or even into June. If you are a slower hiker, you might want to add a week or two to your hiking schedule by finishing this section in mid-May and flipping up to Dunsmuir or Ashland rather than sitting in Kennedy Meadows while the snow melts. Since most people are still getting conditioned, I'm assuming an average hiker does this section at 80% of their average pace.<br />
<br />
<b>The Sierras (Kennedy Meadows to Sierra City):</b> 493 miles, 3,632 ft. of climbing per 20 miles. This is the core of the Sierras, and contains all of the 8,000+ ft. altitude hiking for the entire trail. The main schedule issue for the Sierras is the snow pack and high water crossings until some point in June, and snow returning again in October. See <a href="http://www.postholer.com/">www.postholer.com</a> for data on the snow pack and safe entry dates. In most years, it's feasible for moderate and fast hikers to simply wait for a safe entry date and hike north from Kennedy Meadows into the Sierras and continue with a northbound hike. In 2017, which was an unusually heavy snow year, many hikers upset their thru-hiking schedule by spending too much time pondering what to do about the Sierras, waiting for conditions to improve, skipping ahead anyway, and then simply not having enough time to finish the trail. Due to the altitude, steep trail sections, and snow travel, the Sierras slow most hikers down significantly. I'm assuming an average hiker does this section at 80% of their average pace.<br />
<br />
<b>Northern California (Sierra City to Ashland): </b> 514 miles, 3597 ft. of climbing per 20 miles. This is a lower-elevation portion of the trail that is often hikeable two or more weeks before the Sierras, and is usually hikeable at least through the end of October. So, whether hiking north from Sierra City, or south from Ashland or Dunsmuir, this trail section is a popular and usually accessible one to skip up to after finishing the Desert section. It's also a section that you can "bank" for later if you want to do Washington earlier in the hike and finish with this section, although you may get some rain in October. If you are a slower hiker, or run into schedule issues, a flip or skip can make a thru-hike feasible when a straight-thru hike isn't in the cards. I'm assuming that the average hiker does this section at 100% of their average pace.<br />
<br />
<b>Oregon (Ashland to Cascade Locks):</b> 435 miles, 2,707 ft. of climbing per 20 miles. When people say that Oregon is "flat," they really just mean that is is a bit flatter than the rest of the trail. However, most of the trail is gently sloped and is comparatively easy to hike. In addition, the resupply locations are convenient, and most hikers find that they move through Oregon at a much faster pace than other trail sections. While this section is hikeable through October, you can expect to get some rain during that month. Again, this section can be "banked" until you finish Washington if you get behind schedule. I'm assuming that the average hiker does this section at 120% of their average pace.<br />
<br />
<b>Washington (Cascade Locks to Manning Park): </b> 515 miles, 4,319 ft. of climbing per 20 miles. This section has the most climbing per day by a big margin, but it's also the last section for most hikers, and with 2,000+ miles already hiked, many hikers just motor up the hills. Most of the trail is also very well built and switchbacked, so it's not as hard to hike as you might expect. The big issue with this section is weather from about mid-September on. In the North Cascades, the last two weeks of September often include cold rain and light snow. By early October, heavy snowfall usually closes the northernmost section, and some hikers miss finishing due to these snows. If you can make it work, this is a wonderful section to hike in August. I'm assuming that the average hiker does this section at 100% of their average pace.<br />
<br />
So, now let's bring the two ideas together along with start and finishing dates. In addition to hiking days based on the average pace, I've added one zero/resupply day for every seven days of hiking, and set all of the hiking speeds so that the hiker arrives at Kennedy Meadows on June 5th, which would be a day that a hiker could get up into the Sierras if the snow was fairly light, or get on trail in another section.<br />

These dates are unlikely to exactly match up to your hike, but they should give you a good idea of how hiking pace maps back to your schedule and how tight or comfortable your schedule will be.</div>

An average pace of 17.5 miles per day would result in an October 14th finish in Manning Park, which isn't feasible due to snow. If you expect to be hiking at that average pace, you could skip ahead and hike Washington earlier and finish with Oregon or Northern California. Or, get an earlier start date, get to Kennedy Meadows earlier, and flip up to Ashland or Dunsmuir and hike Northern California and the Sierras southbound, for example.</div>

If you are hiking at an average pace of 20.0 miles per day, your schedule for a straight-thru hike is extremely tight. If you get off schedule, or want to hike up into the Sierras and wait a week to do that, you will need to either pick up your hiking pace, or tighten up your resupply and zero days. Again, some form of skip or flip could make sense for you. </div>

At an average pace of 22.5 miles per day, you have a very realistic chance of finishing the trail in a straight-thru hike, even if you have a schedule slip of a few days, but if an injury takes you off trail for a bit, take a close look at your schedule. Getting off schedule by more than a week will put finishing a straight-thru hike at risk.</div>

Faster hikers won't have any problem finishing the trail in an average snow year, but watch out if we have a repeat of the high snows that we had in 2017.</div>

As a general suggestion, it makes sense to get an earlier start date than shown above so that you have a buffer for recovering from a minor injury, for a home visit at the end of the desert section, for dealing with fire closures, or simply for taking some zero days. I had an April 2nd start date in both 2017 and 2018. In 2017 I finished 2,000 miles, and I completed a <a href="http://www.mindfultrek.com/2018/09/my-accidental-thru-hike-2661-pct-miles.html" target="_blank">full thru-hike in 2018</a>. The main difference for me was having a higher average pace in 2018.</div>

The great majority of PCT thru-hikers are from 20 to 40 years old, so most of the forum discussions are aimed at recommendations from and for hikers in this age range. Hiking 2,000 miles on the PCT in 2017 and thru-hiking the PCT in 2018 at 62, and talking with other hikers, I found that some of the advice we had read before getting on trail missed the mark a bit due to age-related differences. I know that some hikers at 70 are stronger than some other hikers at 25, but most of us lose some faculties as we age, and this post is really about adjusting to that reality.<br />
<br />
Especially if you are over 55, some age and life-experience differences could change the way that you decide to hike the trail. For example, compared to when I was 25:<br />
<br />
<ul>
<li>Conditioning takes longer</li>
<li>Recovery from injuries takes longer</li>
<li>When I get chilled, it's harder to warm up</li>
<li>I now need corrective lenses to see well</li>
<li>My joints and feet aren't as robust</li><li>I have less explosive energy, the stuff you need when a river sweeps you downstream</li>
<li>I'm not as competitive or achievement oriented</li>
<li>I have a lot more family responsibilities</li>
</ul>
<br />
If any of this resonates with you, here are a points to consider:<br />
<br />
<b>Goals and Announcements</b><br />
What is motivating you to get out on trail? Is it to see the trail, to enjoy being in nature, to get away from the pressures of your ordinary life? Is there something special to you about "achieving" a thru-hike vs. doing a longer section hike? I met one over-60 thru-hiker in 2017 who had hiked 2,575 miles in 2016, but described her 2016 hike as a failure, because she missed a thru-hike by 70 miles. She had announced to her friends and colleagues that she was absolutely going to thru-hike the trail and was mortified that she couldn't achieve her goal. <i>Suggestion: with all the uncertainties of weather, fire closures, and personal injuries, consider your goals and what you announce to friends and family. There is nothing wrong with section hiking till you complete the trail, or even leaving out sections of the trail entirely (gasp!). The hike takes on the meaning you give it.</i><br />
<i><br /></i><b>Schedule and Start Date for a Thru Hike</b><br />
It's hard to make sense of the widely divergent views on the "ideal" start date. Of course, the ideal date is dependent on snow levels, and until the snow pack is fully in place toward the middle of April, no one really knows when it will be feasible to enter the Sierras safely, so you will have to pick your start date far in advance of this information. If you have a start date in early April, you can always take a week or two off after the desert section, but if you start in early May and possibly have an injury that requires a rest period, you could end up "schedule challenged." A lot depends on how fast a hiker you turn out to be. <i>Suggestion: If you won't be fully conditioned when you start, or think you might be a slower hiker, go for a start date during the first two weeks of April. That way you have adequate time to condition on trail and take rest days. It's much more pleasant to finish in Manning Park during early September than after the weather has already turned cold and wet.</i><br />
<br />
<b>Skipping and Flipping</b><br />
As you think about your plan, how important is a "straight thru" hike vs. skipping sections and returning to them, or doing part of the hike northbound and part southbound? If it's compatible with your goals, you can hike the trail sections in any order, modifying the order to improve the safety and weather conditions of your hike, and extend the hiking season. For example, going northbound up into the Sierras early can result in more dangerous water crossings, while instead you could be hiking south from Ashland or Dunsmuir in late May and beat the heat in Northern California while you let the snow melt and water levels fall in the Sierras. Likewise, you could finish hiking Washington in August before the rain and snow shows up, and leave parts of Oregon for September or even October, missing the mosquito season as well. <i>Suggestion: be open to skips and flips, especially if you are under 5'5", have joint issues, or find that you are a slower hiker.</i><br />
<i><br /></i>
<b>Conditioning</b><br />
You might have read something like: "it takes about three weeks to get your trail legs." This is both true and ridiculous. You will notice a difference after about three weeks on trail, but you won't really reach a high level of conditioning that quickly. It took me about 1,000 miles to really feel conditioned. When I asked other older hikers what they would recommend for older hikers, every person mentioned conditioning as the number one area to focus on. <i>Suggestion: invest as much time as you can on your conditioning before getting on trail. It will pay dividends in speed, enjoyment, and reduced injuries. If you are comfortable hiking 12 miles with your loaded pack on, with 2,000 feet of climbing, you are likely well enough conditioned to start the trail.</i><br />
<i><br /></i>
<b>Injuries</b><br />
Of course you can fall or twist an ankle, but the most common injuries, by far, are over-use injuries. Shin splints and joint inflammation are common, and can cause intense pain as well as take you off trail. Over-use injuries seem to pop up most commonly after the first 300 miles of hiking, so it can be hard to predict these from your conditioning hikes. Ibuprofen, sometimes referred to humorously as Vitamin I, can help a lot, but over-use can lead to kidney damage, so it's not a silver bullet. Rest, is the most reliable cure for an over-use injury, and it's often necessary for older hikers to take 7 days or more off trail to recover from an over-use injury. <i>Suggestion: leave enough time in your schedule that a two-week hiatus to recover from an injury won't prevent you from achieving your hiking goals. Since injuries most often occur in the desert section for NOBO thru hikers, this could just mean getting on trail by the third week in April.</i><br />
<i><br /></i>
<b>Equipment</b><br />
The equipment that you need doesn't vary that much from younger hikers, with a few areas to pay special attention to. I was happy to have warm clothes, even when some hikers were shivering to save weight. I have a really good headlamp (Fenix HL12R), because I'm a relatively slow hiker and tend to break camp before it gets light so that I have a longer day--anything that puts out 70 lumens plus is fine. I needed corrective lenses in my sunglasses, so I had some great glasses made by Opticus, a company that specializes in glasses for outdoor activities. And, with family responsibilities it was important for me to have a Garmin InReach and text with my wife every night. <i>Suggestion: lighter IS better, but also take seriously staying warm and other areas that might be important to you. It can be hard and expensive to make a lot of changes once you are on trail, so at least have your base weight under 20 pounds before setting off on your PCT hike.</i><br />
<i><br /></i>
<b>Nutrition and Resupplies</b><br />
Good nutrition is important, and you will often have a better chance of getting food that you consider nutritionally sound if you mail yourself resupply boxes vs. trying to resupply locally. Brenda Braaten's article "<a href="https://thru-hiker.com/articles/pack_light_eat_right.php" target="_blank">Pack Light, Eat Right</a>" is worth reading. There are a lot of resources to help with resupply planning, so I'll just leave you with that thought on resupply boxes.<br />
<br />
<br />
You will meet hikers of all ages on the trail, and I found myself chatting and enjoying breaks with hikers from 18 to 80. My age never seemed to limit me socially, and that was one of the nicer aspects of being on trail. I wasn't planning to thru-hike in 2018 ... I just wanted to get out on trail and enjoy hiking the PCT. Over the course of five months, the miles just rolled by and pretty soon I was within a few hundred miles of hiking the whole trail. At that point, finishing fever did set in, and I buckled down to complete the whole trail in 2018. It was strenuous, fun, and satisfying.<br />
<br />
<b><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">What I learned</span></b><br />
<br />
A backpack, a good reason to get up every morning, and the beauty of nature were enough for me to be happy. Being able to text with my wife every night and a few home visits helped me from getting home sick.<br />
<br />
I didn't need a house full of possessions, constant entertainment, or to be competitive with other hikers. I didn't need the "achievement" of a thru-hike, although I admit to feeling absurdly self-satisfied when I finished the whole trail. Luckily, I was surrounded by other people who also finished, and people who didn't hike the trail don't really care that much, which is just as well.<br />
<br />
<b><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">What I Found Extraordinary</span></b><br />
<ol>
<li>How incredibly beautiful many trail sections are, ranging from lush rain-soaked forests in Washington, to the stark and forbidding lava fields in Oregon, to the granite citadels in the Sierras. The pictures only give a faint hint at the soul-satisfying experience of being inside these beautiful landscapes. Every part of the trail has its own distinct character and beauty, and taken together they give a sense of the complexity and richness of the earth's ecosystems. </li>
<li>That the PCT was created in the first place, and that it is maintained over the entire distance every year mostly by thousands of volunteers -- it's marvelous and remarkable.</li>
<li>That our relatively soft, urban bodies can adapt quickly to the rigors of hiking 25 miles per day and so many people can physically get in the miles to finish the trail in a season.</li>
<li>That so few people get seriously injured hiking the trail, despite many close calls, including many falls and scary water crossings.</li>
<li>That it takes less than 20 pounds of gear to hike 2,661 miles, with most of the gear making the whole trip without repairs or replacements.</li>
<li>That so few human conflicts on trail spin out of control, and that thousands of hikers manage to get along without the aid of any visible authority.</li>
<li>That so many "trail angels" appear spontaneously to provide unexpected snacks, or to provide rides to hikers. Given the remoteness of the trail in places the rides make a huge difference.</li>
</ol>
<br />
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><b>What I Enjoyed the Most</b></span><br />
<br />
To restrict myself to a few things: being in nature for so much time; pushing myself and finding my physical limits; and, the jaw-dropping beauty of so many places along the trail.<br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><b>My Gnarliest Days</b></span><br />
<br />
I had only a few really tough days. Here are the ones that I remember most vividly:<br />
<ul>
<li>Night hiking out of Hiker-Town with Shorts to get a jump on a waterless stretch of the Mojave. We stopped at sunset and were mesmerized by the display of colors over the desert. That day ended finally after 10 PM when we pitched on a dirt road, only to get up before daybreak the next day to beat the heat.</li>
<li>Pushing miles to get over Dick's Pass southbound in the Desolation Wilderness before sunset. It was a race against time to make it over a large snowfield before it got too dark to make it to a campsite at Gilmore lake on the other side of the pass. While it was exhilarating, I would not have minded another 30 minutes of sunlight. </li>
<li>Starting my hike up Mount Whitney by headlamp to beat the expected thunderstorms. I summited at 9:40 am and the thunderstorms started by 10:15 am as I was descending back down from the summit. Some other hikers turned back to avoid being hit by lightning. When I got back to the Crabtree Ranger Station camp, I just crawled into my tent and went to sleep.</li>
<li>Stumping down 35 miles in a single day to Kennedy Meadows south because it was raining so hard that I couldn't face pitching my tent in the downpour. It finally was just misting when I pitched at 10:30 PM at the campground.</li>
<li>Falling off a log crossing at Lemah Creek right into the water at 6 PM, banging my shin hard enough on a rock to make my leg swell up, and soaking my clothing just as the temperature was plummeting for the evening. I got a few hours of sleep that night but then packed up my camp at 2:30 AM and hit the trail a few minutes after 3 AM just to get warm again. In the afternoon I was able to dry everything out on a huge rock in the sun. It took a week before my leg no longer looked swollen.</li>
<li>Walking southbound out of Castle Crags to the I-5 crossing under the cover of a heavy smoke cloud that dimmed the late afternoon sun into near darkness. I-5 was closed due to the nearby fire, and the trail that I had just hiked was closed the day that I hiked it. It was all a bit eerie.</li>
</ul>
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><b>My Typical Day</b></span><br />
<br />
Most of my days included incredible scenery, but nothing else dramatic. I would typically get up early enough to start hiking around first light, sometimes using my headlamp for just 10 to 15 minutes. At day's end, I would pitch my tent while it was still light, cook some dinner, and crawl into my tent for a well-earned rest. "Hiker midnight" is around 9 PM, and I was usually asleep by then.<br />
<br />
The first 1,500 miles of the hike, I was mostly hiking around 20 to 24 miles per day. After getting through the Sierras, I was fit enough to hike longer days. In the last 1,100 miles I hiked 27 or 28 miles on 12 days, 29 or 30 miles on 8 days, and 31 or more miles on 4 days. These aren't extraordinary distances by thru-hiking standards, but they were long days for me. All of these days also involved thousands of feet of climbing.<br />
<br />
I had about 12 days of rain to deal with, mostly in California as it turned out. A few of those rain days included grapple or hail, but I somehow avoided getting snowed on directly in 2018. The rest of the days were basically dry, which was great. We had a few days where it was below freezing in the morning, but that was rare. In the desert there were a few days that were especially hot, and then we just found some shade in the afternoon, and carried a lot of extra water.<br />
<br />
<b><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">My Trail Name: Lickity Split</span></b><br />
<br />
I got my trail name in 2017 from a fun group of younger hikers. They noticed that I was always out of camp early and that I took short breaks. Basically, I like to be on trail and hiking, which is necessary for me anyway since I hike a little slower than most people. When I protested that I'm a slow hiker, Grim just laughed and said, "Yeah, in that way it's a reverse name. Like calling a really big dude 'Tiny.'" So, Lickity Split stuck, and I kind of like the rhythm of the name, and that it's a little anachronistic -- a bit like me.<br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><b>Volunteering and Crowd Sourcing</b></span><br />
<br />
During my 2017 hike I had met Pete Fish, a member of the Trail Gorillas, who take care of the southern-most 702 miles of trail. Pete recruited me to do trail scouting, mostly recording the location of downed trees, washouts, and other trail obstructions. I did this trail scouting for about 1,000 miles of trail in 2018, reporting the obstructions to the PCTA through John Shelton, another Trail Gorilla who was tech-savvy enough to convert my GPS readings into something more usable by trail crews.<br />
<br />
For the rest of the trail I regularly sent in updates to the crowd-sourced water report that is maintained by DoubleTap and HalfMile.<br />
<br />
For me, volunteering in this way made me feel more connected to the larger community of volunteers, and helped me to feel more connected to the trail itself.<br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><b>Future Plans</b></span><br />
<br />
A lot of long-distance hikers are drawn to doing other long trails like the Appalachian Trail and the Continental Divide Trail. At the moment I haven't been intrigued by either trail, but I'm sure I'll get interested in some type of hike by next season.<br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><b><i>A More Detailed Review of my Hike</i></b></span><br />
<br />
When I finished my 2017 PCT hike of 2,000 miles, I was happy, and was just thinking of finishing up the last 661 miles of the PCT in 2018 as a section hike. Then, in early October 2017, while my feet were still sore, the phone rang and my friend Lori asked what kind of PCT permit I would be getting for 2018. She was starting a thru hike and wanted someone to hike with, or at least to get started with. I agreed to start with her and probably to hike the whole desert section, but didn't intend to thru-hike the whole trail. So began my accidental thru-hike in 2018. As has often been said, a journey of 2,661 miles begins with a single phone call.<br />
<br />
Lori and I got thru-hiking permits and started on April 2, 2018. We had great weather, cool and mostly dry. Around Lake Morena, just 20 miles into the hike, we picked up three younger hikers who had the unexpected idea that hanging out with Lori and me would be a good way to start the trail. That made for a fun social group, and we stuck together until mile 209, at which point one of our group split off. Then after Big Bear, at mile 266, we stopped trying to hike as a group, although we did stay loosely in touch. Lori had been experiencing a worsening pain in one of her heels, and at Big Bear decided to take some time off trail to recover. That was the last time I would hike with her in 2018, although we didn't realize that her recovery would be so slow until much later.<br />
<br />
So, I just continued up the trail on my own, chatting with other hikers along the way at water stops and camps, forming a few trail friendships, and texting every night with my wife using an InReach satellite communicator. Hiking the desert section, I was surprised to find that I enjoyed it even more the second time around. There was less stress, and I could appreciate the nuances of the trail more fully, a bit like re-reading a book. I reached Kennedy Meadows south on May 18th, and needed to decide what to do next. Even though 2018 was a low snow year, it was still too early to go up into the Sierras safely, especially with a storm coming, and with my arthritic knees, so I decided to take a home visit in Richmond, California.<br />
<br />
I arranged a ride to Inyokern with Bob from Grumpy Bear's, and Lori generously drove up to Inyokern from Barstow, giving us a chance to catch up, then dropped me at the Barstow Amtrak Station, and from there I got connecting service directly to Richmond. My wife Christine was travelling on the east coast, but I still made good use of the home visit, creating resupply boxes for the 796 mile hike south from Dunsmuir to Kennedy Meadows, during which I would pick up most of the miles that I had missed from 2017. I also got to take both my daughters for birthday dinners, as they each have a June birthday that I would miss. Taking an Amtrak up to Dunsmuir gave me a chance to start my onward hike on May 25th at a low enough elevation that snow would not be a problem, and this also proved a fortunate choice since that section was later closed due to wildfires (aka forest fires). My one small miscalculation was that on May 25th it rained steadily most of the day, so it wasn't the ideal day to get back on trail, but it wasn't a big issue since the next day was sunny by the afternoon.<br />
<br />
On June 10th I had reached Donner Pass, which is right on I80, an easy drive from Richmond, and since Christine was now back from her own travel, she picked me up for a few days at home. We had a nice home visit, and another birthday celebration for the June birthdays. This was the first time that I really started thinking about doing the entire trail in 2018. Christine said that it would be OK from her perspective, so I put together a rough plan for hiking the last 1,100 miles of trail, although I still needed to hike south from Donner Pass to Kennedy Meadows before I would be ready to start in on it.<br />
<br />
Christine drove me back to Donner Pass on June 14th, and I continued south. The hike through the Sierras was both beautiful and physically demanding, with big climbs most days, and both hiking and camping at higher elevations than anywhere else on the trail. In this section I also carried a heavier pack, a bear canister, water crossing shoes, and trail spikes for snow, so my pack was extra heavy. Although I didn't really think about it at the time, going through the Sierras boosted my conditioning so much that the entire rest of the trail was physically easy by comparison.<br />
<br />
I finally made it down to the Kennedy Meadows campground on July 11th, having hiked until 10:30 PM the last day due to an unrelenting rainstorm that made pitching a tent unappealing. Although it was tiring, I hiked 35 miles that day, which is still my longest day ever. With some good luck with hitches, I actually managed to get home to Richmond just 12 hours after reaching the paved road through Kennedy Meadows. Since I was now planning to hike the rest of the trail, I worked on resupply boxes along with visiting at home.<br />
<br />
By this time, wildfires had started to affect access to the PCT, with closures in southern Oregon, which I would be hiking into if I started back on the trail at Dunsmuir. So, to avoid these fires, I got on trail 320 miles north of Dunsmuir at Crater Lake, and started hiking north toward Washington. Christine drove me to the trail on July 16th, and I was back on trail on the 17th. This was a good time to hike through northern Oregon, since we had good weather and only moderately irritating mosquitoes. By the time I was at Cascade Locks, it was a good time for a break, and I visited friends John and Mary in Portland briefly, getting off trail on July 29th and back on trail on July 31st.<br />
<br />
By this point my conditioning was very good, so hiking Washington wasn't especially difficult, but it was sometimes hard to stay motivated due to heavy smoke from nearby forest fires that obscured many of the most dramatic views. There was a short fire detour due to the Miriam fire just before White Pass, but that wasn't problematic. When I reached Steven's Pass, Lori and her husband Bill plucked me off the trail for a zero day at their home, which was refreshing. There was a second fire detour just south of Stehekin, which again wasn't difficult to navigate, and was interesting for me since I got to see some different trail. Unfortunately, a third fire closure starting at Rainy Pass popped up just two days before I would get to Stehekin, and hikers were anything from upset to distraught, as this closure involved an "alternate" that had us hiking a shorter, less-scenic route than the PCT normally follows, and not being able to actually reach the Northern Terminus or enter Canada. It was a very second-class route, and many people, including me, were reluctant to hike it, especially with continuing smoky conditions. This alternate route also required special National Park Service permits, but the NPS had not yet sorted out how to issue these from Stehekin, so everyone that hiked it when I went through just did it without the required permits.<br />
<br />
I put off a final decision by just hiking up to Rainy Pass then travelling back down to Crater Lake to pick up the 320 miles from Crater Lake to Dunsmuir, as the southern Oregon closures were now open again. To get back to Crater Lake I got a miracle hitch from Rainy Pass all the way to Marysville, near Seattle, took an Airporter Shuttle to SeaTac, flew to Medford, and then negotiated a ride to Crater Lake for $120 with a local taxi driver. I had originally planned to hitch to Crater Lake, but learned that "no one is going to Crater Lake due to the smoke." When I got there, it was pretty quiet. I got on trail and started hiking south, just a day after getting off at Rainy Pass.<br />
<br />
The hike from Crater Lake to Dunsmuir was smoky on the first and last days, with mostly clear skies in between, and hardly a single mosquito. That made hiking southern Oregon a lot more enjoyable than during the peak thru-hiking season, and I enjoyed hiking that section even more than last year. As I mentioned earlier, the final day of this section was a bit eerie since I hiked down off of Castle Crags on September 5th to a crossing with I-5, which was silent due to a fire-related closure that started the day I reached the freeway. The trail section that I had just hiked was also now closed, but the closure wasn't posted until I was already on the trail, so I didn't know about it. I had expected to go home directly from Dunsmuir, but by this point the trail from Rainy Pass to Manning Park had opened back up, and I decided to hike that last trail section.<br />
<br />
The I-5 closure stopped the Amtrak, local bus service, and Greyhound service so I was ostensibly on foot. Still, by getting a hitch to Weed and some luck finding a more informal bus ride to Portland, then a Bolt bus on to Seattle, I was able to get out of the fire zone and nearer to Rainy Pass. A ride from friends in Seattle plus three hitches had me at Rainy Pass, and I got back on trail on September 8th.<br />
<br />
The last trail section was now clear of smoke and stunningly beautiful. Hiking this last section was the perfect way to finish my 2018 hike. Well to be more exact, it would have been absolutely perfect if it didn't rain so much, but who's sweating the details? I reached the Northern Terminus on September 10th in the early evening, and camped just over the border in Canada. One day before reaching Manning Park, I met Bomber, another hiker who was finishing the PCT, and he offered to give me a ride to Bellingham, WA from Manning Park the day after we would arrive on September 11th. That was a big help in getting home, and I was able to get an Airporter Shuttle from Bellingham, then a flight to Oakland on September 12th.<br />

With this northern-most section of the PCT, I completed a thru-hike in 2018, hiking all 2,661 PCT miles from Campo at the border with Mexico to Manning Park, BC in Canada -- in a single season. I'll post a more reflective bit on my overall experience this year in a day or two, so this post will just bring you up-to-date with this section and surrounding travel.<br />
<br />
The journey from Dunsmuir to Rainy Pass was a bit of an adventure. I shared the first part of this in my last post. Without going into too much detail: I hiked down out of Castle Crags State Park to where the PCT crosses I5, hoping for a hitch into Dunsmuir to catch an Amtrak train. I5 was eerily quiet because it had been closed due to the nearby wildfires. Unbeknownst to me, the trail section that I had just hiked was now also closed, it had just not been posted as closed when I hiked onto it that morning. I5 seemed the safest place to hike, so I started hiking the three miles into Dunsmuir along the shoulder, with the occasional firetruck or police cruiser my only company. After 15 minutes or so a combination backhoe and front-end loader rumbled up behind me and I was able to hitch a ride in the cab for a mile or so. After another mile of hiking I was in Dunsmuir and spent the night at the Dunsmuir Lodge. <br />
<br />
After phone calls to Amtrak and Siskiyou County, I determined that neither the trains nor local buses were running, so I was on foot until I could get a hitch. Greyhound claimed to still be running a 7:10 AM bus to Seattle out of Weed, which is 18 miles north or Dunsmuir, and was past the I5 fire closure. A local Dunsmuir resident gave me a ride into downtown Dunsmuir and after we shared a breakfast burrito she generously offered to drive me into Weed. I think she was aghast that I was actually planning to walk the 18 miles if I couldn't get a ride. Since my bus wasn't until the morning, I stayed overnight at the Sis-Q Inn, which was surrounded by 18-wheelers that had been diverted by the I5 closure, and across the street from where the Cal-Fire crews were staying and parking their fire equipment, giving the whole place a very industrial feeling. <br />
<br />
In the morning I learned at the combination Mexican Restaurant / Greyhound Station that the Greyhound bus had been cancelled. However, the waitress said that a "Mexican bus" would be coming through in a few hours, and for $77 cash I could get a ride into Portland. Although this all seemed a little informal, it was better than hitch hiking up I5, so I rode the bus into Portland, probably the only person on the bus that was not fluent in Spanish. In Portland the "bus stop" was just some open curb near a Burger King. From there I grabbed a Lyft and had a very quick visit with friends Mary and John before catching the Bolt Bus up to Seattle.<br />
<br />
In Seattle, friends Beverley and Bill picked me up from the bus-stop and took me in for the night. In the morning, Bill generously drove me up to Sedro-Woolley, from where it seemed likely that I could hitch to the trailhead. Like magic, ten minutes after Bill dropped me off, three gnarly rock-climbers picked me up in a very-experienced RV and took me over 50 miles up the road. Two hitches later and I was at the Rainy Pass trailhead at 2 PM on Saturday.<br />
<br />
The timing was just about perfect for getting on-trail and into the mountains. Last year it was misty and raining when I hiked up from Rainy Pass, so I was really delighted that it was clear enough this year to see the extraordinary mountain views on the hike up. I also passed a group doing "goat packing," which was a first for me, and a little humorous. While I only hiked in 10 miles the first day, it was still a surprise that I didn't see any other PCT hikers on trail Saturday. The next day it started raining lightly in the early afternoon, and kept up with intermittent rain or drizzle the rest of Sunday and on until Monday evening. While I didn't push crazy miles, I did hike pretty steadily on both Sunday and Monday, making 56 miles in two days from my first campsite to the Northern Terminus (aka Monument 78). Due to a fire closure, there was a detour from Hart's Pass to Woody Pass that added 4 miles to the usual trail length, but the alternate trail was well-marked and maintained, so it wasn't a problem. I felt a bit of "finishing fever" during the last day of the hike, but mostly it was just wonderful to be up in the North Cascades enjoying the mountains. <br />
<br />
On Monday night I camped just over the border in Canada, then tramped the last 8 miles into Manning Park in the morning. I stayed overnight, did laundry, and dried out my gear at the Manning Park Hostel, then rode on Wednesday morning with fellow-hiker Bomber (Rick) and his wife Emily into Bellingham, WA, and on to SeaTac by bus, and then home via Southwest Airlines. All of that travel was uneventful, although I did feel very out-of-place by the time I was at the SeaTac airport, with my unkempt hair and worn, if reasonably clean, clothing. <br />

When I reached Rainy Pass the PCT was closed ahead due to an active fire, so I decided to head down to Crater Lake and hike this section, hoping that the trail would reopen. I got a single hitch down Hwy 20 close enough to SeaTac airport to make it onto a flight to Medford the next morning. On the way down Highway 20 we stopped at an overlook for Ross Lake where Poseidon, another PCT hiker, was considering canoeing to the border due to the closure. There isn't any public transportation from Medford to Crater Lake, and the smoke was keeping tourist traffic to a minimum, so I paid a taxi driver $120 to get me to the trailhead, getting back on trail just one day after leaving Rainy Pass.<br />
<br />
The trail through southern Oregon has fewer big climbs than most sections, and the weather was mild. Except for the first day hiking south from Crater Lake, the smoke wasn't too bad, just creating a haze that obscured the more distant mountains. I made good time to Callahan's Lodge near Ashland where I expected a resupply package to be waiting for me. My package had not arrived yet, and it turned out to be making a tour of Oregon, complete with stops at Eugene, Spokane, Portland, and Medford before getting to Ashland the next day. Since I was tied down waiting for my package, Christine drove up and we had a relaxing day together at the lodge.<br />
<br />
Hiking on, the trail crosses into California, then goes through Seiad Valley, the Marble Mountain Wilderness, the Russian Wilderness, the Trinity Alps, and Castle Crags before dropping down to I5, just north of Castella. This section from Seiad Valley to Castella is one of the most spectacular parts of the trail with long high traverses through beautiful mountains and water from clear flowing springs.<br />
<br />
The last day hiking through Castle Crags there was an enormous smoke plume from a nearby forest fire, and so much light was blocked by the smoke that it seemed like dusk had settled by early afternoon. I had been "pushing miles," covering 89 miles in three days, so my feet were tired when I reached I5, expecting to hitch into Dunsmuir for a hot meal, and to catch a train to Seattle the next morning.<br />
<br />
You know something is amiss when you reach a major interstate highway and instead of roaring traffic you just hear the wind blowing softly through the trees. For a few minutes it was as quiet as the set of a movie scene in a dystopian future without cars. <br />
<br />
After determining that I5 was closed to normal traffic, I shouldered my backpack and started up the on ramp, sharing the huge Interstate with occasional fire trucks and police cruisers. After 15 minutes of walking, a combination backhoe and front end loader rumbled up behind me. The driver invited me up into the cab and got me about a mile down the road before dropping me at the next exit. He was evacuating by backhoe to save his equipment from being burned up. I continued on foot one more exit on the Interstate then walked into the south end of Dunsmuir where I grabbed a sandwich at Manfreddi's Deli and got one of the last rooms at the Dunsmuir Lodge shortly after night fall. <br />
<br />
In addition to the freeway being closed, Amtrak had cancelled the Coast Starlight train that normally stops in Dunsmuir, and Siskiyou County also suspended their local bus service. Greyhound still claimed to be running a bus from Weed to Seattle, so the next morning I started walking, prepared to road hike the 18 miles into Weed if necessary. After 10 minutes I got a hitch from a very nice Dunsmuir resident who progressed from I'm just going a mile up the road to "I guess I'm driving to Weed" as she contemplated my plan with an empathetic shake of her head.<br />
<br />
Finding an inexpensive hotel near the Greyhound stop in Weed, I had a relaxing day, feeling confident that I would be traveling on the once-a-day 7:10 am bus the next morning. In case you are seeing a pattern here ... Greyhound was happy to sell me a ticket and even check me in for the bus, but when I reached the bus stop I learned that the bus had been cancelled from a waitress at the Dog Amigos Mexican Restaurant next to the Greyhound stop, who had checked the bus tracker. But, not to worry, for $77 in cash I could get a seat on a "Mexican bus" to Portland in a few hours, and get onward transportation from there. <br />
<br />
So, as I write this on a Friday, I'm sitting in a very nice, unmarked, nearly-packed bus, where English is definitely a second language at best, cruising toward Portland. Either Saturday or Sunday I hope to be at Rainy Pass, so I can hike the last 75 miles of trail for this year.<br />

Smoke and fire dominated both the views and hiker worries over this section. Even after a day of heavy rain, by the time the morning mist started to clear, smoke already had replaced it making for hazy views for almost the whole hike. As we approached Rainy Pass, my eyes were stinging, and everything smelled and tasted of smoke. My water filter even clogged up from ash, spitting out a stream of charcoal particles when I backflushed it. For safety reasons, the PCTA issued a "no hike" request for the trail north of Rainy Pass, with a legal closure at Hart's Pass due to active fires. While there was technically an alternate to get to Canada, it would still be smoky, and permits for that hike were difficult to arrange. So, along with many other hikers, I opted to stop this section at Rainy Pass, considering the last section as closed trail. Some other hikers pushed on without permits along Ross Lake, and I am sure we will hear how that worked out soon.<br />
<br />
Snoqualmie Pass seems to be the dividing line between forests that are well watered, and an almost rain-soaked landscape to the north of the pass. The forests are lush with moss, ferns, fungi, berries, waterfalls and tall beautiful trees. While we were enveloped in smoke, fire had only touched the PCT recently in a few spots. It seemed to be a place where forest fairies might live, and the haze strengthened the sense of being in a magical and primordial landscape.<br />
<br />
At Stevens Pass, friends Lori and Bill whisked me off the mountain for a day of rest and their amazing home cooking, including barbecued curry chicken and boysenberry cobbler from freshly picked berries. Lori started the trail with me on April 2nd, but suffered an overuse injury to her heel early on and had to stop her hike to mend.<br />
<br />
Once back on trail, along with the forest fairies, I enjoyed hiking with Mike and Z, Lady Bug, Slim, Big Dog, Spice Cat, Heidi, Potable, Mugwort, Fivel, and many others who I had met earlier on the trail.<br />
<br />
Without rehashing the technical aspects of the closures, we were rerouted through Holden Village, a Lutheran retreat center with excellent meals, and took a ferry into Stehekin, which was fun. With some quick transitions in town, most of the northbound hikers made it onto the 2 PM bus up to the PCT trailhead, stopping at the Stehekin bakery on the way out, one of the culinary high points of the trail. I had a slice of boysenberry pie, and it was almost as good as Lori's cobbler.<br />
<br />
The closure to Canada brought up a lot of emotions for many hikers, including sadness, tears, and a sense of despondency. It wasn't so hard for me because I hiked that final section last year all the way into Manning Park. Also, my hike has never been centered on the idea of a Mexico to Canada hike, instead my hike is about being in nature and overcoming a challenge, with the thru-hike more of a context than a goal. Another hiker had dedicated his hike to the memory of his mother who had recently passed on, so for him the closure seemed like a failing in his effort to honor his mother. All this emotion highlighted for me that the hike doesn't have any inherent meaning, but it can have significant personal meaning to a hiker.<br />
<br />
Once at Rainy Pass, six of us got another amazing hitch from the trailhead straight to Marysville, just an airport shuttle ride away from SeaTac Airport. Later today, I will fly down to Medford and get to Crater Lake to continue my hike. I have roughly 320 miles still to hike for 2018 to be considered a thru-hike for me. Currently, the trail is all open, with several earlier fire closures having been lifted.<br />

After spending a day in Portland with our hospitable friends John and Mary, and getting a ride back to the trail, I crossed over the Columbia River on "The Bridge of the Gods" and labored up the steep climb out of Cascade Locks, which is the lowest elevation of the trail. I vividly remembered the blackberries in this section from 2017 and was treated again this year to an "all you can pick" feast.<br />
<br />
The trail from Cascade Locks to Trout Lake primarily traverses a forest landscape, similar to Northern Oregon, but with the addition of a lot more rain, and more climbing. I enjoyed just "making miles" in the forest, and got to the Trout Lake access road just as some other hikers were getting dropped off, so I had a ride lined up straight away. Three of the hikers getting back on trail as I got off were ones that I knew from the desert section, and it was good to catch up with Crush, Ridge Route, and Shortcut.<br />
<br />
I did a quick turnaround at Trout Lake and got back on trail the same afternoon. Feeling refreshed, I blasted up the trail, and made it 16 miles in to where Ridge Route and Shortcut had pitched with an incredible sunset view of Mount Adams. They had actually hiked on another mile, but doubled back after reaching the overflowing Adams Creek, preferring a morning crossing when the snowmelt would be at it's low point. In the morning we found a safe crossing and continued on.<br />
<br />
This section includes the Goat Rocks Wilderness, with dramatic mountain views and strikingly beautiful waterfalls and meadows. For about a mile the trail has been carved into the top of a ridge, and this is appropriately named "The Knife's Edge," as there are steep dropoffs on both sides of the trail. As you might guess, this makes for fantastic views, as well as a slightly giddy sensation. As I hiked The Knife's Edge, I could see thick clouds of smoke from the "Miriam" fire to the east, and when I reached Tieton Pass, the PCT was closed, with a detour to the west. The 9.2 mile reroute ended at a busy roadway, and I caught a hitch up to White Pass where I could rejoin the PCT.<br />
<br />
White Pass was the temporary home base for the fire crews, and there were about 50 colorful backpacking tents in a field right at the Pass, presumably personal equipment for each firefighter. After a shower and laundry stop, I pressed on rather than spend a night at the noisy road area. <br />
<br />
Hiking on toward Snowqualmie Pass, I started with a short day, then had three days with about 6,000 feet of climbing each. I met Papa Oats on trail who referred to this as PUD (pointless up & down) since we were in forest almost the whole way, providing minimal payoffs at the top of each climb.<br />
<br />
As I headed toward a campsite at the end of one day, I spotted a Z-packs tent tucked into a small flat spot on the hillside. It was a remarkable choice of pitch locations, with a great view, and I stopped to admire it. After I made a comment, from inside the tent Mike Sauget recognized my voice, and quickly emerged. We had not seen each other since Kennedy Meadows, so it was great to catch up and we also made a plan to share a meal at Snowqualmie Pass. <br />
<br />
By the time I reached Snoqualmie Pass, my feet were sore, and I was ready for a break, having finished almost half of Washington. I checked into "The Summit Inn" for a two-night stay and have been luxuriating in the simple pleasures of town life. Tomorrow morning I will continue north toward Stevens Pass, which will be my next stop.<br />

Due to the fires, trail closure, and smoke in southern Oregon, after finishing the Sierras, I decided to get back on trail at Crater Lake, temporarily skipping ahead of Dunsmuir, where I would have restarted to continue my 2018 hike with an unbroken foot path. Christine, my wife, volunteered to drive me up to Crater Lake; we enjoyed the drive together, and I felt some relief as well as we sped by Dunsmuir where the thermometer was pegged at 104 degrees in the early afternoon. Christine dropped me off at the campground and I stayed overnight at Mazama Village, at the base of the crater that forms Crater Lake.<br />
<br />
Getting back on trail after a break is always an adjustment, and I was feeling a little sluggish climbing out of Mazama Village up to the rim of Crater Lake. On the way up I surprised a small bear who climbed a tree while barking at me, which woke me up a bit. By the time I got to the rim, the restaurant at the historic Crater Lake Lodge was open, complete with an espresso machine and formally-dressed wait staff. After a breakfast of Eggs Benedict (yes really), I felt fortified and launched back into my hike.<br />
<br />
The trail along the rim of Crater Lake goes from one dramatic viewpoint to the next, giving hikers stunning views of some of the bluest water in the world. As you will see in the photos, there was a slight haze from ongoing Oregon fires, but it was still spectacular.<br />
<br />
This section of the trail is punctuated by relatively frequent lake-side resorts, giving opportunities for resupply stops as well as an occasional cooked meal. The trail is also mostly "fast trail" through forests, trending up or down but usually not too rocky or steep. As a result, my mileage was higher than usual, averaging 25 miles per day, even with resupply stops. I visited Shelter Cove, Elk Lake, Big Lake Youth Camp, Ollalie Lake, and Timberline Lodge, which is on the shoulder of Mount Hood, rather than at a lake.<br />
<br />
Since I skipped ahead of the fires, I also skipped ahead of the "bubble" of thru-hikers, seeing as few as one other northbound thru-hiker in a day, and never more than a handful. This made for a more-than-usually meditative hiking experience. The PCT in northern Oregon passes through some interesting mountains, especially the Obsidian and Shale limited entry areas, and the Three Sisters and Mount Hood wilderness areas, which showcase their respective mountains. At the same time, the primary view, for hour after hour of hiking, is simply forest, which looks very similar for hundreds of miles. Hiking along, there is the rapid but barely perceptible rhythm of your heartbeat, the much slower rhythm of breath, and interposed between these the rhythm of your steps. It's sometimes an experience of walking meditation, and at other times I plug in my earbuds and listen to an audiobook, podcast, or music. During this section I listened to the topical "Fire," by Sebastian Junger, and "Diamonds Are Forever" by Ian Fleming.<br />
<br />
The biggest surprise for me in this section came in walking through forested areas that had burned just last year. A hot forest fire kills everything in it's path, with temperatures reaching at least into hundreds of degrees. After the spring melt, some scattered grass germinates, but the ground is otherwise completely barren. The forest is silent without insects, birds, deer, or even chipmunks. When you approach a small stream, you can often begin to hear the water a long way off, and the contrast of the life-giving stream and the desolate landscape has a discordant quality. The trail dust is mixed with ash, and your legs get even more black than usual as it sticks to your skin. Even the air remains tinged with the smell of smoke, which will take another season to clear completely. Hiking through miles of these fresh burns was fascinating and wonderful, although it was also enough for one season for me.<br />
<br />
When I reached Cascade Locks, it was satisfying to me to have achieved my goal of hiking the entire PCT. Between my hike in 2017 and my hike this year, I've hiked all 2,650 miles of the trail. While I'm still continuing my hike in 2018 with the intention of thru-hiking (doing the entire trail in one season), hiking the whole trail was always my primary hiking goal, so I'm happy to have achieved that. Right now I'm taking a day off in Portland at the home of good friends here, and will get back on trail tomorrow, headed north through Washington.<br />

After a resupply and refresh at the Mt. Williamson hotel in Independence, I climbed back over Kearsarge Pass and into the last stretch of the high sierras. In addition to the PCT mileage, this section includes an additional 24 miles of trail by the time you have hiked in from Kearsarge Pass and climbed Mt. Whitney, so it's a meaty 111 trail miles of hiking.<br />
<br />
The first day back on trail I hiked close enough to Forrester Pass to climb over it in the early morning the next day. At 13,200 feet, this is the highest point actually on the PCT, and I was slightly worried that it would leave me short of breath as I have not been that high for over 30 years. The trail on the north side was well switchbacked, so it wasn't a hard climb, and I got up easily. At the top, it looked like someone had come up and planted purple flowers all over, and it made me think of my younger daughter who loves to decorate for any occasion. The south side of the pass rises much more steeply, and the route is a really audacious example of extreme trail building. I read somewhere that the pass was "discovered," but I think "created" would be a much more accurate description.<br />
<br />
After Forrester Pass the next major stop is the Crabtree Ranger Station campsite, which is the staging point for PCT hikers climbing Mt. Whitney. While Mt. Whitney is just 7.5 miles from this campsite, climbing almost 4,000 ft. to reach the top at 14,505 ft. still makes for a significant effort. The trail passes by the beautiful Guitar Lake, where JMT hikers are allowed to camp, and rises steeply through a series of switchbacks. The last 1.9 miles includes a lot of rough trail, and like the south side of Forrester Pass a lot of the trail building alternated between blasting out a path and creating a path through the air with dry masonry walls. I left my campsite at 5 AM, starting out with my headlamp, and reached the top at 9:30 AM, just in time for the threatening clouds to part a little and for sunshine to warm the summit. A forest fire was burning on the east side of the mountain, so the views were a little hazy, but it was still spectacular. At about 10:20 AM I headed down, meeting my trail friend Patrick and his brother who were just summiting as I was leaving. As I walked off the summit a gentle rain started and continued off and on until I was nearly back to the campsite. At this point the rain increased and fell steadily for several hours, so after a quick dinner under the trees I just napped in my tent, giving up on adding any trail miles that day.<br />
<br />
The next two days I was focused on "making miles" and getting back home for a visit with my family. The first day I just hiked steadily and surprised myself by making 28 miles to a perfectly flat campsite in a sparse forest, hiking through light rain for only about an hour that day. At this point I was about 37 miles out from Kennedy Meadows, so I planned to get off trail after another day and a half of hiking. This plan altered when about 4 PM the next day the sky opened up with lightning, thunder, hail, and then heavy rain. I didn't see a lot of point in trying to make camp in that wet mess, so I just kept hiking, confident that the rain would run out as the day went on. At about 8:30 PM, with intermittent rain still falling, I got out my headlamp and hiked on until 10:00 PM, when I reached the Kennedy Meadows campground, making for a 34.8 mile day, my longest hiking day ever. I must have seemed like some kind of madman, arriving at 10 PM at night and packing up then next morning before 5 AM, but I wanted to finish the section and get home.<br />
<br />
At 6:06 AM I stepped out onto Sherman Pass road, connecting to my hike from Campo to Kennedy Meadows, and completing the southern 1,498 miles of trail. I started a road walk toward the Grumpy Bear restaurant, where I planned to get breakfast at 8:00 AM and see if I could get a ride out to the highway at 9:00 AM. At just about 7 AM the first car approached and so I stuck out my thumb and was lucky enough to get a ride out of Kennedy Meadows with a meadow conservationist, who took me all the way to highway 395, improving on my plan by at least 2 hours. Ten minutes after getting to the highway I got a short hitch to Inyokern, planning to next hitch on to Mojave, where I could catch a bus to Bakersfield. After only 10 minutes a Jeep pulled up and I got a miracle hitch all the way to the Amtrak Station in Bakersfield, arriving at 11:10 AM, allowing me to catch the 12:00 noon train to Richmond, and arrive home just at 6:06 PM, exactly 12 hours after starting my journey home.<br />
<br />
I'll be at home for a few days, then Christine, my wife, will drive me to Crater Lake to get back on trail. I'm getting back to the trail north of Dunsmuir because there is a big fire still going near Ashland, so the trail is closed there, and the air will be smoky. My plan is to hike north up to Manning Park, then finish the section from Dunsmuir to Crater Lake after a short home break.<br />

This post necessarily covers a lot of mileage as I have not had network service through the High Sierra's. Right now I'm at the Mt. Williamson Motel in Independence, where I stopped for a resupply.<br />

First, no words of mine could possibly convey the jaw dropping beauty of these mountains. Neither can I fully convey the effort of hiking over so many high passes, which is the price of admission to this astonishing "range of light." In the photo album there are hundreds of photos to give you a bare idea of the landscapes.<br />
<br />
Coming out of the Kennedy Meadows Pack Station I faced Sonora Pass South side with some trepidation. Other hikers had advised that it was dangerous, with many steep, slippery, and exposed snow sections. As if to add emphasis to this warning, one of the hikers coming off the pass told me that it "wasn't that bad," but couldn't hide the blood dripping off his arm where he had ripped a ten inch scrap of skin off in a fall on the pass. Luckily I was carrying heavy trail spikes; these strap on and add about a dozen half-inch steel spikes to each boot that bite into hard snow and ice. Although the pass was slow and sometime nerve wracking, it went fine.<br />
<br />
That was the last "bad" snow that I had to face. The trail from that point to Tuolumne Meadows alternated from easy forest and meadow trails to extremely steep trails with many loose rocks, which I have nicknamed "ankle breakers." These steep trails are very slow for me, as I have to "baby" my knees, but I kept up my mileage, partly out of pride, and also because I was only carrying enough food to stay on schedule.<br />
<br />
When I reached Tuolumne Meadows, the Post Office was closed, so I stayed over in the Backpackers Camp and enjoyed a hot breakfast before getting my resupply in the morning. When I got back on trail, I had a minor revelation that the John Muir Trail, which the PCT overlays through this section, is one of the best built and maintained trails anywhere. While the elevations and climbs present challenges, the trail itself is easy to hike.<br />
<br />
Until reaching Kearsarge Pass, every day has had a similar pattern: climb up and over a ridge or pass, then down into a valley, then up the other side. Most days involved 20+ miles and 3,500+ ft. of climbing. Physically, this was some of the hardest hiking that I have done. At the same time, the scenery was amazing and it was worth every panting breath.<br />
<br />
Along the way I detoured through the Devil's Postpile National Monument; grabbed breakfast at Red's Meadow, and just missed getting to meet a PCTA trail crew there. I took the ferry into the Vermillion Valley Resort and got my resupply bucket there, as well as three excellent meals.<br />
<br />
In this section I met again quite a few people that I had hiked with previously, including Giggles, Kay, Out-of-the-Blue, Farmer, Anthony and Adrian, Four Eyes, River, and Patrick, who I started the trail with. It's remarkable how small the trail can feel at times<br />
<br />
Now that I have hiked South past the entire "bubble" of Northbound hikers, I've completed my taxonomy of hikers with respect to the Sierras in 2018:<br />
<br />
Mountaineers - the super early into the Sierras who went through while everything was still frozen. Another hiker called them the PTSD group, since they all seemed to be in a mild daze. These were almost all men in their 20's.<br />
<br />
Gnarliest - the next group in who went when the conditions were still dangerous. Out of five people that I knew personally in this group, two had significant injuries, and one was almost swept away in a river crossing. The other two just said that it was cold, exhausting, and slow. Another hiker called it "type two fun," and clarified that it was fun to look back on, but not to go through.<br />
<br />
Big Bubble - most hikers went through when conditions were safe and just called the snow "annoying."<br />
<br />
Late Speedsters - hikers who started late, but who are hiking 25 to 30 miles every day. These hikers fly down the trail with seeming ease. Yep, I'm jealous.<br />
<br />
Math Challenged - hikers who think they are thru-hiking, but who haven't worked out that they can't possibly finish the trail at their current pace. I usually encourage this group to be happy with whatever they complete.<br />
<br />
Rong Way - people who have flipped one or more times, usually to avoid hiking in snow, but also for an inexhaustible list of personal reasons. I'm in this group, and flipped up to Dunsmuir and started South to minimize the risk to my fragile knees.<br />
<br />
July 4th fell during this section, and I felt a strong sense of gratitude hiking the trail that day. First I'm grateful to live in a country with such beautiful mountains; second, I'm grateful for all the effort to create the parks and the trails that make the mountains accessible; and equally I'm grateful to my wife and children for being so supportive of my hike. I tried to express this gratitude in a video, once on Mather Pass, and then again two hours later at a lower elevation. Maybe some day I can find a more poetic voice.<br />

After my three-day home visit, my wife Christine drove me back to Donner Pass where I got back on trail continuing southbound. I felt like a lumbering pack mule carrying food for a 140 mile section, the longest trail section I have ever carried food for. <br />
<br />
Climbing out of Donner Pass the trail crosses highway 40 and an historic and defunct railroad line with the snow tunnels still intact. Apparently the old right of way is now a hiking trail. <br />
<br />
About six that evening I hit a large snowfield and began to ponder possible camping spots. Using my phone to look at a topo map I noticed a map feature blink in and out of visibility. Playing with the map I found just the right zoom level for the Benton Ski Hut to show up. It felt a little like penetrating into another dimension to find this elusive marking. The ski hut was just a bit off trail, and was a perfect shelter from the rising wind, with me as the solo occupant.<br />
<br />
The next few days the trail was mostly clear of snow, with just small snow fields on the more protected north-facing slopes. I had to work hard carrying my heavy pack, but the beautiful mountain scenery was ample compensation. <br />
<br />
The second night I made it to Barker Pass, where I was again the only camper. I was interested to hike through Desolation Wilderness the next day, where I had backpacked before, but never from this end of the park. I wanted to get over Dick's Pass that day and had received many ominous reports of the snow that I would have have to cross to get to the pass itself. Mentally I created a timetable for getting to the pass and just squeaked under it, crossing out of the snowfield at around 6 pm. The trail down to Gilmore Lake was thankfully easy. <br />
<br />
Waking to freezing temperatures at Gilmore Lake, I stumped out of the Desolation Wilderness, reaching the Berkeley Echo Lake Camp at around noon. Just as I arrived at the camp, hail pelted down, and I ran the last few hundred feet. Kate and Coltrane, two family friends, are working at the camp this summer, and I had intended just a quick stop to say hello. The hail helped me decide to stay the night, and I spent most of that afternoon next to the fire in their lodge.<br />
<br />
After breakfast and hugs, I headed out toward Carson Pass, with Sonora Pass my further destination. Along the way I started seeing other hikers that I had met in the desert section. The consensus seemed to be that pushing through the Sierras so early was exhausting, wet, cold, and dangerous. Two of my trail friends had fallen and been injured, and one had a close call on a stream crossing. As one hiker expanded "it was type two fun, not fun at the time, but good to look back on." Even though I didn't want that particular adventure, I can understand the impulse to do something really difficult and even risky as a contrast to our ordinay life.<br />
<br />
Although I've now hiked more than 3,000 miles on the PCT, I'm often mistaken for a weekend backpacker by other thru-hikers. On the run up to Sonora Pass I had unsolicited advice to be careful on the snow from two hikers, and replies to my queries that had me expecting a large snowfield on the way to the pass. In the end the snowfield covered just a 0.4 miles of trail, so it wasn't hard to get past. There were some points in the snow where a fall would likely be fatal, so I did try my best to stay upright.<br />
<br />
During this section I met about 100 northbound hikers who had made it through the high Sierras. This subset of hikers was dominated by men in their 20's, with all other trail demographic groups greatly under represented. I think this will all change back to a more balanced mix further north.<br />
<br />
After reaching Sonora Pass, I hitched into the Kennedy Meadows Pack Station (aka Kennedy Meadows North), where I'm taking a rest day before continuing south.<br />

Climbing southbound out of Belden the trail transitions from a landscape where volcanic forces had the upper hand to the beginning of the Sierras with their tectonic and glacial influences. As if to punctuate the change, I surprised black bears on both the first and second days. One was just a bit off trail and went crashing away through the underbrush, and the second was actually standing on the trail with his back to me until he looked around and also galloped off.<br />
<br />
The scenery was dominated by mossy forests, fast-running streams, and craggy mountains. There were also beautiful mountain lakes, including Tamarack Lakes, where I camped one night.<br />
<br />
This was an interesting section for meeting other hikers. In the 127 miles of this section, after passing one other hiker on the first day, I didn't see another southbound hiker. Many of the dozen or so northbound hikers that I met had "made it through" the Sierras. To paraphrase their common experience: Wet, Cold, Exhausting, and sometimes Sketchy. Oh, and almost as an afterthought, very beautiful. Undoubtedly, fresh snow creates a magical scene.<br />
<br />
"Sketchy" has taken over on the PCT for: dangerous, irritatingly difficult, or unpleasant. This nearly all-purpose term can be applied to steep snow traverses, river crossings, weather conditions, and campground bathrooms. Unfortunately it's use is now so widespread that a "sketchy" traverse could be anything from life-threatening to simply one where extra caution makes sense. More on the "trail of 1,000 opinions" later.<br />
<br />
In an <a href="http://www.mindfultrek.com/2018/05/p187-tehachapi-to-kennedy-meadows-136.html" target="_blank">earlier post</a>, I outlined three things that I like about long-distance hiking: traversing vast landscapes; living simply; and, tolerance and acceptance. Here are a few more:<br />
<br />
<ol>
<li><u>Beauty</u>: The photo sets give you a very small taste of the beauty that hikers are immersed in. It's an extraordinary blessing to be soaked in the beauty of nature day after day.</li>
<li><u>Community or comraderie</u>: Whatever term you use for it, the mutual positive regard between hikers, and between hikers and others in the wider community, is a constant source of positive feedback that all of us enjoy. It's also fun to be a "D list" celebrity ("hey are you hiking that trail?").</li>
<li><u>Relaxation</u>: Remember this is my list ... and I have to add the profound relaxation that follows a long day of hiking, as well as the brief relaxation of taking a break in the sun. </li>
<li><u>Weight loss</u>: A bit prosaic, and hard to maintain, but losing 20+ pounds feels great, even if it doesn't all stay off once back at home.</li>
<li><u>Fitness</u>: Hiking 10+ hours a day has increased my fitness significantly, and being more fit is a great feeling.</li>
<li><u>Craft</u>: Backpacking, like most activities, relies on a great deal of specific knowledge and judgement gained through experience. I get pleasure out of becoming more skilled at the craft of backpacking. </li>
</ol>
<br />
Most of this trail section was uneventful. Simply one amazing day after another. I did have some trepidation over the Sierra City to Donner Pass section, as I knew there would be significant snow in that section. Naturally I consulted northbound hikers that had passed through this section in the last few days. Ask two PCT hikers a question, and you are likely to get three opinions. Some of the feedback that I got was: <br />
<br />
<ul>
<li>quite a bit of snow, but you can make it through</li>
<li>snow for 21 miles of the trail</li>
<li>a lot of snow, but "doable" (always a very subjective and vague assessment)</li>
<li>traction devices would be helpful (this refers to using crampons or microspikes to get over a "sketchy" section)</li>
<li>I glissaded down some of the switchbacks ... not sure how you can climb up them</li>
<li>cold, wet feet for two days</li>
</ul>

The trend of these comments had me a bit concerned, but basically I was committed to hiking that section, so I didn't worry too much about it. You can leave extra time for a difficult section, but ultimately once you decide to hike it, there isn't much point in stressing about it in advance, and you can be sure that your own description of the section will be different from most of the people that you consulted. In the end, there were seven and one-half miles with significant snow cover, just one 0.8 mile continuous snow field, and only about 0.2 miles of direct-route climbing past switchbacks that were snow-covered. In net: not a big deal.<br />
<br />
The last full day on trail I awoke to heavy winds and cold temperatures, and had a hard push to make it 22.5 miles, including getting through most of the snow section. My reward was staying at the Peter Grubb Hut, which is a Sierra Club hut just 3.2 miles short of Donner Pass. A group of five hikers from Reno were already at the hut when I arrived, and they had a fire going in the stove which brought the temperature up to about 50 degrees in the hut. Caveman, an Austrian PCT hiker, arrived shortly after I did. Following a quick dinner and chat with Caveman I called it a night and slept soundly, as usual. <br />
<br />
The next morning I popped out of the trail at the I-80 rest-area at Donner Pass. My wife Christine had driven up from Richmond to pick me up and we are enjoying a chance to catch up, not having seen each other since April 1st. I'll start back on trail in a few days.<br />
